The Crystal Narrow Path pulsed beneath their feet, stretching through the forest like a ribbon of starlight stitched to the earth. Every step sent a soft vibration through the soles of their boots, as if the forest itself was alive—and watching.
Dalia froze. “Wait. Are we… actually doing this?”
Sienna smirked. “Yes. And yes, it’s completely insane. But totally unavoidable now.”
“Unavoidable?” Dalia echoed, raising an eyebrow. “Because someone left a cryptic note and we’re too curious to ignore it?”
“Exactly.” Sienna’s grin widened. “Totally reckless curiosity. My favorite personality trait in you.”
Dalia shoved her shoulder. “Hey! That’s—ouch!—extremely unfair.”
They stepped onto the path together. Crystal shards along its edges shifted and arched as they walked, glowing brighter whenever their footsteps touched the ground. Sparks of light shot upward like tiny fireworks, landing near their boots. Dalia jumped.
“Okay,” she whispered, “this is officially magical *and* terrifying.”
Sienna laughed. “Better than boring, though, right?”
Dalia groaned. “I hate how you’re right.”
The path twisted upward, rising over a stream of liquid crystal that shimmered like molten silver. Each reflection showed them slightly different—Sienna’s eyes brighter than normal, Dalia’s grin a little crooked—but when they blinked, it was gone.
Sparks zipped through the air. A glowing fox darted past, leaving a streak of light like a comet. Dalia stumbled back. “This is *not* normal.”
Sienna tugged her forward. “Normal is overrated. Besides, we’ve got this.”
“*We’ve got this*?” Dalia echoed. “I’m the one who’s about to fall into a glittery river of death, and you’re pep-talking me?”
Sienna laughed. “Exactly.”
The forest seemed to respond. Crystal-tipped vines slid down from the trees, brushing against their arms. They recoiled, and the vines twisted back up like snakes with a sense of humor.
Dalia grabbed Sienna’s sleeve. “Okay. Okay. Not funny. Definitely not funny.”
Sparks popped at her feet. A small creature, glowing faintly blue, darted across the path and vanished. “What was that?” she asked.
“Probably a forest spirit,” Sienna said. “Cute. Harmless. Maybe plotting to steal our socks.”
Dalia groaned. “I regret trusting your judgment already.”
The path narrowed, forcing them to walk single file. Sienna led, Dalia following reluctantly, eyes darting to every glowing tree and shimmering stone. Suddenly, the ground wobbled beneath Sienna’s foot. She looked down—half a step off the path and she would have tumbled into a pool of liquid light.
“Careful!” Dalia shouted.
“I *am* being careful!” Sienna said, hopping back onto solid crystal. “The path is tricky, not evil!”
“Tricky! That’s reassuring,” Dalia muttered. “Honestly, Sienna, sometimes your definitions are terrifying.”
They rounded another bend, where the trees arched overhead into a cathedral of crystal light. Tiny motes floated like fireflies, weaving between their hair and faces. The hum of the path grew louder, vibrating through their chests.
“Beautiful… but probably alive,” Sienna whispered, catching one of the motes on her palm. It twinkled and flitted away.
Dalia blinked. “I hate that I’m enjoying this *and* terrified at the same time.”
Sparks of light zipped across the path again, forming a soft glowing barrier. Sienna stepped carefully, testing it, and the barrier parted as if recognizing her. Dalia followed, muttering about magic being unfair.
The air thickened. Shadows darted at the edge of their vision—some flickering, some solid for a heartbeat, then gone. Dalia shivered.
“You think the city is really out there?” she whispered.
Sienna shrugged. “Who knows? But if it is… it’s not going to wait for us to be ready.”
The path tilted slightly upward. Ahead, the trees thinned, revealing a faint shimmer that could only be the **first hint of the city**, hidden behind the forest. It glimmered just out of reach, mysterious and tantalizing.
The Crystal Narrow Path pulsed, glowing brighter with every step. The girls felt it tug at them, calling them forward.
Dalia grinned despite herself. “Fine. I admit it. This is epic.”
Sienna laughed, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “Told you. And we haven’t even gotten to the fun part yet.”
A sudden rustle made them both jump. Tiny crystal shards floated in the air like sparks, forming shapes that darted around their heads. The forest seemed alive, playful, mischievous—and a little dangerous.
“Epic and slightly terrifying,” Dalia corrected.
“Exactly,” Sienna said, stepping onto the next glowing stretch of the path. “Welcome to the adventure.”
Step by step, Sylvanglade disappeared behind them. The ordinary world vanished. Ahead lay mystery, danger, and—somewhere in the distance—the legendary city, still hidden, still waiting.
And the girls were already on their way.
