CHAPTER 5: ACCIDENTAL DISCOVERY

1784 Words
The days following that incident blurred together in a mix of confusion, fear, and a strange, growing warmth. Axel Blackwood remained an enigma—cold and distant to the rest of the world, yet showing me glimpses of a softer side that no one else seemed to know existed. I told myself I was imagining things, that his kindness was just part of his controlling nature, but deep down, my heart knew the truth. He was different with me. And that made everything so much more complicated. It was a Friday night, close to midnight, when everything changed forever. A massive pile of urgent documents had arrived late in the afternoon, contracts that needed to be sorted, filed, and ready for Axel by Monday morning. I had volunteered to stay back and finish it, wanting to prove my worth, and perhaps… just wanting to be near him a little longer. He hadn’t objected; he had simply nodded and gone back into his office, leaving the door slightly ajar—something he had started doing recently. The entire top floor was silent, dark, and still. Only my desk lamp and the light coming from under his door lit up the long hallway. The city outside glittered with lights, but in here, it felt like a different world—quiet, isolated, and heavy with secrets. I stretched my back, rubbing my tired eyes. I had been working for hours. The stack was finally getting smaller, but I still had a long way to go. I reached out to grab a thick blue folder that had slipped off the edge of my desk, but my hand missed it slightly. The heavy file slid across the smooth marble floor, gliding fast toward the end of the hallway. Thud. It stopped right in front of the forbidden door. My heart skipped a beat. That door. The one he had warned me about on my very first day. The one he had said I must never, ever approach. The one he locked every night and disappeared into for hours. I looked toward his office door. It was quiet. He hadn’t heard the small sound. I hesitated for a second. Just go get it quickly and come back. He won’t know. It’s just a door. Curiosity, that dangerous thing that had been growing inside me for weeks, finally won over my fear. I stood up slowly, walking quietly on tiptoes toward the end of the hall. My heart was pounding so hard I was sure it would jump out of my chest. I reached down to pick up the folder. And then… I saw it. The heavy wooden door wasn’t closed properly. It was slightly ajar. Just a tiny c***k, barely wide enough to see through, but wide enough to let a strip of warm yellow light spill out into the dark hallway. I stood there, frozen. Every rule, every warning, every scary story he had told me screamed at me to walk away. Go back, Isla. Sit down. Mind your business. But I couldn’t. I had to know. I had to know what was behind the only secret he kept locked away. I took one step closer. Then another. I held my breath, pressing my back against the wall next to the door, and slowly, very slowly, I leaned forward to peek through the gap. What I saw made my blood turn into ice. My breath caught in my throat, and I had to clamp my hand over my mouth to stop myself from screaming. The room was large, much bigger than his main office, and it looked nothing like the rest of the building. There were no fancy paintings, no expensive furniture, no business documents. Instead, the walls were lined with shelves… shelves filled with weapons. Guns. Dozens of them. Handguns, rifles, shiny and black, laid out neatly on velvet racks. Knives of every size and shape—long, sharp, terrifying, looking like they had been used many times before. There were bulletproof vests, tactical gear, maps spread out on a central table marked with red crosses and strange codes, and screens showing live feeds of different locations around the city. And right in the middle of the room… stood Axel. He had his back to me. He had taken off his suit jacket, and his white shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves rolled up high. He was holding a large, deadly-looking black gun in one hand, cleaning it with a cloth, his movements precise, fast, and natural. Like he had done it a thousand times before. This wasn’t the movement of a rich businessman or a CEO. This was the movement of a soldier. A warrior. A killer. He turned slightly to the side, and that was when I saw it clearly. On the back of his hand and smeared slightly up his wrist… was a dark, reddish-brown stain. Fresh. Wet. Blood. My knees went weak. I gripped the wall to stay standing. Then, he spoke. His voice was low, rough, and completely different from the smooth, commanding tone he used during the day. It was darker, colder, stripped of all pretense. "Target eliminated. Clean and fast. No witnesses left behind," he said into a small device attached to his ear. His voice was flat, emotionless, like he was talking about taking out the trash, not ending a human life. "The package is secured. I will dispose of the remains myself." He paused, wiping the gun carefully, his grey eyes cold and empty, looking nothing like the eyes that had looked at me with concern only a few days ago. "Tell the clients… Zero has delivered again. And remind them… no one hires me and survives to complain. I am the best. I am the only one. And I answer to no one." Zero. The name echoed in my head. I had heard that name whispered before, in dark corners, on the news, in scary stories people told each other late at night. Zero. The Number One Killer in the World. The most feared, the most expensive, the most dangerous man alive. A ghost. A legend. A monster no one had ever seen and lived to describe. My boss. My cold, handsome, terrifying boss… was Zero. He wasn't just involved in illegal business. He wasn't just connected to bad people. He was the worst of them all. He was the man governments hired to kill their enemies. The man criminals feared more than the police. The man who walked in shadows and left death in his wake. And I… I had been working for him. Living under his protection. Eating his food. Letting him treat my wounds and help my mother. Tears pricked my eyes, hot and fast. Fear, shock, heartbreak, and confusion all crashed into me at once. The kindness I thought I saw… the softness… was it all a lie? Was I just another thing he owned, like his cars or his guns? I couldn't breathe. I couldn't stay there another second. I stepped back, my legs shaking so hard I could barely move. I had to get out. I had to leave this building. I had to get as far away from him as possible before he found me and decided I knew too much. I turned around to run away. But in my panic, my foot hit against the heavy metal base of a nearby shelf. CREAK. The sound was loud, sharp, and echoed through the silent hallway like a gunshot. Inside the room, everything went instantly quiet. I froze. Time stopped. Slowly, terrifyingly, the door in front of me swung fully open. Axel stood there. He stood tall, filling the doorway, looking down at me. In his hand, he still held that deadly gun. His grey eyes, usually so unreadable, were now pitch black, wide, and filled with pure, unmasked danger. The look on his face wasn't the face of a CEO… it was the face of a predator who had just cornered his prey. He didn't speak. He didn't shout. He just stared at me, his eyes traveling from my terrified face, down to my trembling hands, and back up to my eyes again. He knew. He knew exactly what I had seen. I looked up at him, tears spilling over, my whole body shaking violently. I raised my hands in front of me, instinctively trying to protect myself. "I… I am sorry… sir… I didn't mean to… I didn't see anything… please…" I whispered, my voice cracking, barely audible. He took one step toward me. Then another. He moved silently, like a shadow, closing the distance between us in seconds. He towered over me, the smell of gunpowder, rain, and danger surrounding him completely. He leaned down, his face inches from mine, his breath hitting my skin. His eyes searched mine—dark, angry, betrayed, but also… something else. Pain. "You saw it," he said. It wasn't a question. It was a statement. Deep, low, and final. "You saw everything, Isla." He raised the hand holding the gun. I squeezed my eyes shut, waiting. Waiting for the pain. Waiting for the end. This is it. He will kill me now. I know his secret. No one survives knowing his secret. I waited for the shot. I waited for him to push me away or drag me into that dark room. But nothing happened. Instead, I felt his hand—the one without the gun—wrap tightly around my wrist. His grip was firm, strong, and unescapable. He pulled me forward, yanking me until I stumbled right against his chest. He leaned closer, his lips brushing against my ear, his voice dropping to a whisper that sent shivers of pure terror and strange excitement racing through my veins. "You know who I am now, little secretary," he murmured, his voice rough and dark. "You know the truth. You know I am not the man you thought I was. You know I am a monster… a killer… the most dangerous man walking this earth." He pulled back just enough to look me in the eye again. His grey eyes swirled with darkness and a terrifying kind of possession. "I should kill you right now. It would be safer. For me. For you. For everyone." My heart stopped beating completely. He paused, his thumb brushing roughly against my cheek, wiping away a tear. His expression softened just a fraction, changing from deadly danger to something much, much scarier. "But I won't." His voice was low, possessive, and absolute. "Because now… you are part of this secret too. You have seen the beast. And now that you have… you belong to me completely."
