CHAPTER 19: THE PROPOSAL

1626 Words
The process of stepping away from his empire took weeks of careful work. Axel spent hours every day meeting with his most trusted men, signing papers, transferring assets, and dismantling the network he had spent his whole life building. He did it with a focus and determination that amazed me, handling every detail personally to ensure that when he walked away, he left no loose ends, no dangers, and no unfinished business that could ever follow us. And through it all, he was different. Lighter. Happier. The heavy burden that had sat on his shoulders since he was a boy was slowly lifting, replaced by a bright, warm hope for the future. He smiled more. He laughed louder. He looked at the world not as a place to conquer or fear, but as a place to live and enjoy. One beautiful evening, about a month after he had made his decision, he told me to dress up. "Wear the blue dress," he had said softly, his eyes sparkling with a secret I couldn't quite guess. "The one I bought you months ago. I want to take you somewhere special." I did as he asked, putting on the soft, elegant blue dress that hugged my figure perfectly, letting my hair fall loosely around my shoulders. When I came downstairs, Axel was waiting for me. He stood at the bottom of the stairs, dressed in a crisp white shirt and dark trousers, looking less like a mafia boss and more like a prince from a fairy tale. His breath caught when he saw me, and for a long moment, he just stood there, staring, like I was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. "You take my breath away," he murmured, walking up to meet me and taking my hand to kiss my knuckles gently. "Every single time. I never get used to it." He led me out to the car—not the heavy, armored vehicle we used to take, but a sleek, beautiful luxury car, open at the top to let the warm wind flow through. He drove us out of the city, away from the tall buildings and busy streets, heading toward the coastline. We arrived just as the sun was beginning to set, painting the sky in brilliant shades of orange, pink, and purple. He parked the car near the edge of a high cliff overlooking the ocean. Below us, the waves crashed gently against the rocks, the sound soothing and peaceful. There was no one else around. Just us, the sky, and the endless sea. Axel got out and came around to open my door, offering me his hand. "Come." He led me to a soft blanket he had already spread out on the grass, with a basket of food and a bottle of wine waiting beside it. We sat down together, shoulder to shoulder, watching the sun sink lower toward the water. "It’s beautiful," I whispered, leaning my head on his shoulder, feeling completely at peace. "Axel… this place is amazing." "It is," he agreed softly, his arm wrapping around my waist to hold me close. "I bought it today. This land. This house that we will build here. It is ours. No one else’s. This is where we will live. This is where our new life begins." I lifted my head to look at him, my heart swelling with love. "Ours?" "Ours," he confirmed, smiling down at me. He was quiet for a moment, gathering his thoughts, his expression shifting from happy to serious, intense, and full of emotion. He took both my hands in his, holding them tightly, his thumbs rubbing gentle circles over my skin. "Isla… do you remember the first time you came to my office? You were so nervous, so shy, just trying to get a job to save your mother. You had no idea who I was. You had no idea what kind of world you were stepping into." I nodded, smiling at the memory. "I thought you were the coldest, scariest man alive." He chuckled softly, the sound deep and warm. "I was. I wanted you to think that. I wanted everyone to think that. I thought being cold and scary was the only way to survive. But then… you didn't run away. You didn't quit. You stayed. You were kind to me. You saw past the monster and found the man hiding underneath." His voice grew deeper, filled with a powerful love that vibrated through every word. "You saved me, Isla. You didn't just save my life… you saved my soul. You taught me that love is stronger than fear. That happiness is better than power. That being loved is worth more than being feared. I gave up an empire, I gave up my name as Zero, I gave up everything… and I would do it a thousand times over, because the only thing that matters… is you." He slowly stood up, pulling me gently to my feet with him. He stepped back just a little, so he could look right into my eyes. "I told you once that you were my light. You are. You are the light that guides me, the light that heals me, the light that makes every dark thing disappear. And now… I never want to be apart from that light. Not for a day. Not for an hour. Not for a second." He took a deep breath, then slowly knelt down on one knee in front of me. My hands flew to my mouth, a gasp of shock and joy escaping me. Tears instantly filled my eyes, blurring my vision. Axel Blackwood—the most dangerous, powerful, feared man in the world—was kneeling in the grass, looking up at me with tears shining in his grey eyes, looking at me like I was his whole universe. From his pocket, he pulled out a small velvet box. He opened it, revealing a ring that took my breath away. It wasn't huge or flashy like the jewelry of the rich. It was simple, elegant, and breathtakingly beautiful. A single, perfect diamond sat in the center, sparkling like a star, surrounded by small silver leaves. It looked like something made from moonlight itself. "Isla Grace," he said, his voice strong but trembling with emotion. "I have lived two lives. One filled with darkness, blood, and pain… and one filled with love, light, and peace. The second life started the moment you walked into my life. I was a man who thought he had nothing, who thought he deserved nothing… until you gave me everything." He lifted the ring up, holding it out to me. "I don't have an empire to offer you anymore. I don't have the title of the most feared man in the world. I am just a man. A man who loves you more than the air he breathes. A man who promises to protect you, cherish you, and love you until his last breath." He looked deep into my soul, asking the question that would bind our lives together forever. "Will you marry me? Will you make me the happiest man alive? Will you be my wife, my partner, my Queen… for the rest of our lives?" Silence stretched between us, filled only by the sound of the ocean and the beating of my heart. I looked down at the man I loved—the man who had fought armies for me, who had cried for me, who had given up everything just to be with me. I didn't hesitate. I didn't need to think. The answer had been in my heart for a long, long time. I nodded frantically, tears streaming down my face, smiling so wide my cheeks hurt. "Yes! Axel… yes! A thousand times yes! I will marry you!" A look of pure, blinding joy broke across his face. He took the ring and slid it gently onto my finger. It fit perfectly, like it was made just for me, like it belonged there all along. He stood up in one fluid motion and pulled me into his arms, lifting me off my feet and spinning me around, laughing with pure happiness, burying his face in my neck. "You said yes," he whispered over and over, like he couldn't believe it was real. "You said yes. You are mine. Forever mine." He set me down but didn't let go, holding me close against his chest, his hands cupping my face as he kissed me—passionately, deeply, sealing our promise with every ounce of love in his heart. Above us, the sun finally dipped below the horizon, and the first stars began to twinkle in the dark blue sky. The ocean roared softly below. And here, on the edge of the world, surrounded by the beauty of nature and the peace of our new life, the most dangerous man in the world was now the happiest man alive. Because he had the only treasure that ever truly mattered. Me. 💬 QUESTIONS FOR READERS 💬 1. Did you cry? Axel kneeling down to propose was the most romantic thing ever!
