Chapter Twenty Six I woke up some time after 9am. I called for Jackie, but she wasn’t there. When I called her phone, it went to voicemail. I didn’t want to sit around and dwell on what happened. I went into autopilot, actively busy without consciously registering. I had a shower, changed clothes, ate some cereal and got into the car. Why didn’t I protect her? I drove to the industrial park on the outskirts of the city and parked beside Homebase. Memories of last night on a loop in my mind. There was no judgement.
