My mother’s sobs filled the office the moment I was brought into that Principal's office, her hands clasped together as she pleaded with the Principal as her voice was thick with desperation. The King of Velmora stood beside her, silent, his face unreadable. He looked at me, his golden eyes heavy with something I couldn’t quite place—sadness? Disappointment? I didn’t care. I was way too angry to care.
Then, out of nowhere, the sharp sting of a slap snapped my head to the side.
