The Marine

Chapter 1

Today was the first day of 12th grade, the day that Payton, Brook, and Lucas have been waiting for all summer.  Payton spent her summer being a life guard at her parents country club.  Brook spent the summer annoying Payton and flirting with all the pool boys.  Lucas was with his family in Arizona.

It was a beautiful sunny day in Laguna Beach, California.  Payton decided to show of her newly tanned body by wearing a pair of bleach stained jean shorts, a white tank top, her sun bleached hair in their natural waves paired with white low top converse, and mascara.

**PING**

Payton reaches over her bed to grab her phone off the charger and sees a message from Brook.

Brook: Here, open up b***h.

Payton chuckles to herself as she slips her phone into her back pocket and grabs her book bag.  Once down stairs she opens the door to her best friends Brook and Lucas.

"Payton!!!" yells Lucas as he picks her up into a hug.  "I missed you this summer.  Brook has filled in me in on all her crushes but i want to know how your summer was."

"Well come inside to eat and i will give you the boring run down," Payton chuckles as she turns inside.

"MOM! I am home" Brook yells up the stairs.

Payton's mom comes down the stairs wearing a ruby red pant suit.  Her blonde hair is pulled into a tight bun/  "Well if it isn't my favorite adoptive kids" she says as she hugs Brook and Lucas at the same time.  

Payton hands her mom a cup of coffee while she waits for her bagel to toast.

"So Lucas, tell me all about your summer" Payton's mom asks.

Lucas chuckles and starts looking nervous "well as you know i was in Arizona with my aunt Ronnie, uncle Keith, and cousin Curtis.  We spent most of the summer hanging out on the Colorado river, spent a week in Las Vegas, my cousin took me to a couple parties but eh.....  we saw a recruiter for the marines.."

"I think thats wonderful news.  My brother and father are marines" says Paytons mom proudly.

"Please say something" Lucas says while looking between Payton and Brook.

*POP*

The toaster pops bringing the girls back to reality.  "I don't know what to say" Brook response first.  Payton just looks at her bagel no longer hungry.

**RING** Paytons alarm starts going off.

"We should leave unless we want to be late to school" Payton says turning her alarm off.

"OH!!!  I got you a last first day of school gift, the gift box is on the dinning room table".  Payton's mom says while trying to hide her excitement.

Payton walks into the dinning room area and finds a small black box with a purple bow on top. Grabbing the box she walks back into the kitchen to rejoin everyone else.

While pulling the bow she looks at her mom "You didn't have to get me anything mom.  I will have at least 4 more first day of school moments"

"I know sweetie, but this is a gift for you for me." Paytons mom says.

Payton starts screaming and runs over to her mom while holding a set of Chevy car keys.

"MOM!!!  How could you afford this?" Payton questions her mom.

"well I know how hard you worked over the summer, you are a great daughter who has kept straights As while taking all AP classes.  Besides, now i don't have to drive you all around town or worry about who is driving you home from swim practice "Payton's mom explains.

"Can you seriously adopt me?" Brook laughs.

"have a good first days of senior year.  I will be home late tonight so here is money for you 3 to get food after swim practice" Paytons mom says while handing Payton $100. 

"Bye mom" all three kids yell while pulling out of the drive way in Paytons new Chevy Silverado.
