CHAPTER TWO: THE IRON TETHER

1620 Words
The Obsidian Citadel did not have dungeons for people like Vespera. Dungeons were reserved for prisoners of state, fallen generals, and political rivals who warranted iron bars and torture racks. Vespera was dragged into something far worse: the King’s private inner sanctum. The heavy, shadow-oak doors slammed shut behind her, the iron deadbolt sliding into place with a heavy, final thud that vibrated through the soles of her worn leather boots. Vespera stumbled forward, her breath coming in shallow, ragged hitches. The room was vast, draped in deep crimson velvet and black obsidian stone, lit only by the low, flickering embers of a massive marble hearth. The air inside smelled of rare cedar, cold rain, and the faint, unmistakable metallic tang of Malakor’s shadow magic. She backed away from the entrance until her spine hit the cool glass of a floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the abyss of the valley below. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her left hand, the bare hand that had touched him, felt hot, hypersensitive, and thoroughly ruined. The skin was still tingling from the electric charge of his dark magic, a lingering, phantom warmth that made her stomach twist in equal parts nausea and unbidden physical thrill. Across the expanse of the room, King Malakor Drakos stood near the hearth, his back turned to her. He had discarded his torn outer mantle, leaving him in a thin, black silk shirt that clung to the broad, imposing tapers of his shoulders and back. Even from behind, he looked like a predator resting after a hunt. But he wasn't collapsing. He wasn't roaring in agony. The black, swollen veins that had threatened to tear his throat open ten minutes ago were entirely gone. Smooth, bronze skin met the collar of his shirt. His posture was straight, commanding, and terrifyingly calm. My magic healed him, Vespera thought, her fingers twitching near the hidden folds of her skirt where the obsidian needle rested against her thigh. I didn't just save my worst enemy, I restored him. "You're shaking," Malakor said. He didn't turn around, but his deep, resonant voice cut through the quiet room like a low frequency. "I have reason to be, Your Majesty," Vespera replied, her voice surprisingly steady despite the fire raging in her chest. She forced her head high, adopting the meek, lowered gaze expected of a low-caste servant, though her eyes remained sharp, tracking his every movement. "A Null servant does not belong in the sovereign's private chambers. If the High Council learns…" "The High Council does not govern what enters my bedchamber," Malakor interrupted smoothly. He turned around slowly. The flickering firelight carved sharp, ruthless angles across his high cheekbones and square jaw. His storm-gray eyes locked onto her with a heavy, suffocating intensity that made the air feel thin. He stepped toward her, his long, deliberate strides entirely silent against the thick fur rugs covering the floor. Vespera instinctively took a step back, but her shoulders hit the glass. She was trapped. Malakor stopped just inches from her. Up close, his height was oppressive. He towered over her, his broad chest blocking out the ambient light of the hearth, casting her entirely in his shadow. "A Null," he echoed, his tone laced with dark amusement. He reached out, his long, calloused fingers catching the frayed hem of her torn canvas sleeve. "A girl born without a single drop of aura. That is what your registry entry says. Vespera... is that the name they gave you?" Her pulse spiked at the sound of her name on his lips. "Yes, Your Majesty." "A lie," Malakor murmured. He pulled lightly on the torn fabric, his knuckles lightly grazing the sensitive skin of her inner arm. Vespera flinched, a sharp shiver shooting straight up her spine. "A Null cannot draw power. A Null would have had her bones turned to ash the moment my shadow magic touched her skin." His gray eyes burned down into hers, searching her face for any crack in her armor. "You didn't burn, Vespera. You drank it." He leaned down, his voice dropping to a gravelly, dangerous whisper near her ear. "For ten years, my mind has felt like it was being devoured by molten lead. Healers from across the continent gave me hours to live. And yet... one touch from a little kitchen servant, and the fire goes cold." "It was an accident," Vespera lied through her teeth, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the fabric of her skirt. "A fluke of magic. A reaction between your surge and the old wards in the corridor. I am nothing, Sire. Let me return to the lower quarters, and I swear on my life I will never speak of what happened." Malakor let out a low, dark chuckle that vibrated in his chest. "Return to the lower quarters?" He reached out, his hand wrapping firmly around her chin, forcing her face up so she had no choice but to meet his gaze. His touch was warm, firm, and undeniably possessive. "Do you take me for a fool? You carry the only key to my survival in those bare palms. You think I would let you out of my sight for a single second?" Vespera’s eyes narrowed, her meek facade slipping just enough to reveal the cold, razor-sharp steel underneath. "I am not your property, King Malakor." "You are whatever I require you to be," he countered instantly, his thumb sweeping over the curve of her lower lip with a slow, agonizing pressure that made her breath hitch. "You are my shadow now. My secret. My tether." He released her chin, stepping back just enough to allow her space to breathe, though his eyes never left hers. He walked over to a heavy mahogany desk near the hearth, picking up a rolled parchment bound in gold silk thread. He tossed it onto the small table between them. "A formal royal decree," Malakor stated, leaning against the edge of the desk, crossing his powerful arms over his chest. "Effective immediately, you are reassigned as my personal attendant. You will sleep in the adjoining chamber. You will eat what I provide. You will accompany me wherever I go." "And if I refuse?" Vespera challenged, her voice dropping all pretense of submissiveness. Malakor’s eyes flashed with dangerous interest at her sudden defiance. A slow, lethal smile tugged at the corner of his lips. "If you refuse, I brand you a traitor who attempted to assassinate the King with black magic," he said casually, as if discussing the weather. "You will be dragged to the public square, and my executioners will take your head before the sun sets tomorrow." Vespera felt a cold rage blossom in her chest. Executioners. The same word, the same threat he had used on her father. She stared at the tyrant king, her blood screaming for violence. Her hand twitched toward her skirt. She could pull the obsidian needle now. He was relaxed, standing mere feet away. She could drive the tip into his throat before he had time to summon his shadow blade. No, her mind warned her, cool and calculating. The guards are right outside the door. If I kill him now, I die within seconds. I need him to trust me. I need him to be vulnerable. Vespera took a deep, shaky breath, letting her shoulders drop as if in defeat. She forced her eyes to fill with reluctant submission. "And what... what will you require of me in this room?" she asked softly, her voice carrying a fragile, trembling edge that was half-acted, half-real. Malakor’s smile faded, replaced by an intense, dark hunger that made the room feel suddenly ten degrees hotter. He pushed off the desk and walked back to her, stopping so close she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. He reached down and caught her bare left wrist, lifting her hand into the space between them. Vespera’s skin flared with heat at the contact. "Every night," Malakor whispered, his eyes locked on her bare palm, "when the shadow curse begins to burn my blood, you will stand here. You will strip away your gloves." He pressed her bare palm against the center of his chest, right over his beating heart. The moment her skin touched his silk shirt, the connection flared to life again. A soft, breathless gasp tore from Vespera’s lips as the dark magic began to flow, a warm, thick, intoxicating pulse of energy that poured from his body into hers. Her hips trembled, an involuntary wave of physical pleasure washing through her nervous system, making her knees feel like lead. Malakor groaned, a low, guttural sound of pure, unadulterated ecstasy, his hand tightening over hers, burying her palm deeper into his chest. "You will draw out the darkness," Malakor rasped, his gray eyes dark with a wild, terrifying mix of relief and rising lust. "You will keep me sane. And in exchange, I will keep you alive." Vespera looked up into the eyes of the man who had destroyed her family. She felt the heavy, furious beat of his heart under her palm. She felt the addicting, sinful rush of his magic flooding her veins, whispering promises of power and pleasure that horrified her very soul. He thought he had bound a helpless servant to his side. He thought he had secured his survival. He didn't know he had just brought his executioner into his bed. "I accept your terms, Your Majesty," Vespera whispered, her bare fingers curling against his chest, digging into the silk over his heart. "Good," Malakor murmured, his dark gaze dropping to her mouth. "Then let us begin your first session.”
