Jacy wouldn’t stop smiling on our way back to the main hall. His face is flushed from the awkward position he saw us in earlier. He’s not a talkative type of person; he likes to keep things to himself too, though his mate Shaka is the complete opposite of him. I doubt if he’ll talk about something like that to anyone.
If he ever tells a soul about how he saw us earlier I’ll punch him in the face.
Amoux, and the rest of the scouts were there. Including Deacon, William, and Caius. Vladimir is the only one missing.
They look awfully prepared, the scouts are heavily armed, and Amoux has a dreadful look on his face.
“We’ve received news from the capitol that an attack happened at Midnight Pack. We’re on our way there.”
“I’ll come with you.” Chris responded. “Me too.” I held his hand a bit tighter.
“No, it's too dangerous.” He retorts. I furrowed my eyebrows at him. “I’m coming whether you like it or not.” I took my hand away from him.
“I’m the lead on this expedition. Listen to me.” His face turned serious, I don’t recognize this side of him. “I’m the alpha. You listen to me.”
“Do you remember what your father said? I’m your mate. I have every right to keep you from going.” Before I could respond, a voice interrupted us.
“You should listen to your mutt Princess.” William scratched the back of his neck, avoiding my gaze. “The road there will be harsh and dangerous. You should sit this one out.” He finally looked at me, and nodded my way.
I felt helpless.
I plopped down the chair in defeat. Before they could leave Deacon spoke. It’s the first time I heard his voice since we came here. “Caius you can stay. Keep her safe.”
Caius nodded without hesitation. I could feel my wolf growl at the sight of him leaving. I hate Chris for making me stay behind.
“Put your claws away.” Caius calmly sat down on the chair across mine. I looked down and saw my wolf’s claws came out, and my hand was already hairy. Her heart is also thumping loudly, I could hear it, and I know Caius does too.
“How can you be so calm? They left you too.” I slumped down my chair, resting my head down on top of the table.
I feel dizzy again.
“I’ve been in countless wars, there’s nothing more I haven’t seen.” He sighed. “After living a hundred years, peace is something I’d rather have than people coming for my neck.” He chuckles to himself. After that was silence.
“I’m an alpha.” I said out of the blue. “You are.” He responds.
“I should be out there leading them.” I pouted.
“Does it make you not an alpha for staying here?” I shot up to look at him. He has a warm smile on his face that makes my heart flutter. Caius. He’s the calm to my storm.
I felt myself smiling back. “No. I guess it doesn’t.” I replied.
“While we’re here, maybe we can catch up on some reading? There’s a big library here we can visit.” His eyes sparkled like a thousand stars up the sky, I feel myself warming up to Caius even more.
We walked side by side to my mother’s library. She has a roomful of books from different countries, Dad brought home just for her.
She’s into reading, she spent most of her childhood locked up in a library because of my grandparents. They wanted her to be smart and literate, to be a proper lady. I’m glad Mom isn’t as strict as them.
I took the key from my pocket and opened the door. The place is dark and dusty, although it’s only been a couple of weeks since she last came here.
“Why does this place look abandoned? Doesn’t anybody read here?” Caius' voice rang from behind me. I used my wolf’s eyes to see through the darkness, I know Caius can see through the dark as well since he’s a vampire.
“This place is built solely for Mom, she doesn’t like other people touching her books.” I shifted my gaze back at the vampire by the door, hesitant to come inside, though his eyes were lusting over the books stored inside the shelves.
“I give you my full permission to enter Sir Caius.” I teased, his eyes turned dark when he looked at me. “Thank you.” He covered up with a smile.
I could only nod in response. Unsure of what I just saw in his eyes.
While we’re here I guess I can look for a book that can help us with our case. Resurrecting someone from the dead isn’t something anyone can do, it’s a forbidden ritual, anyone caught doing will be immediately killed without a trial.
Mom has a hidden room behind a shelf where she stores all the banned books. Although no other person has ever set foot inside this library, she’s extra cautious.
The key is hidden in an old book, the history of Lycanthropy. I remember her reading this book to me when I was young. The door opened smoothly, although the bolts were already rusty and filled with dust, I was able to open it with one push.
Mom’s precious books are perfectly preserved inside glass cases. They each have their own shelves bolted to the wall.
I turned my attention to the box in the middle, the book was missing inside, and it looked like whoever took it away was in a hurry.
Caius’ voice startled me. “Celeste?”
I took a deep breath before looking at him. “You scared me to death.” I said, smiling. Although my heart is still thumping loud. “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to frighten you.” He scratched the back of his head.
“What’s all these?” He pointed at the books scattered on the floor. I haven’t seen them before. “Mom must’ve forgotten to put them back when she was reading.” I picked them up one by one. It’s unlike Mom to leave books lying around, she treasures these. Something’s bothering me, and I don’t know what.
“The Moon Goddess’ book.” He said behind me, I immediately turned around just in time so I could stop his hand from touching the glass. “Careful.”
He looks at me, confused. “Mom used a spell that can knock anyone out who shouldn’t be touching her books.”
“I didn’t know the Queen uses magic.”
“She was a priestess before she married Dad. The church taught her how to use magic to protect people from…”
“From vampires.” He cut me off before I could finish. “I was going to say supernatural beings. It’s not just vampires who threaten the church.” I gave him a sympathetic smile.
“I’ve never met a werewolf before that’s so kind to vampires.” He shyly said, looking away from me. “I’ve never met a vampire before that’s like you.” I nudged his arm.
That got a smile from him. “If you really want to read it.” I took a deep breath before speaking again. “Please move back.” His face turns confused, and worried. Although there’s nothing to be worried about, it’s a tricky spell but it won’t harm me.
He reluctantly stepped away, a couple of inches behind me. “By the door please.” I chuckled.
When he finally moved out of the way, I released a powerful mana, using my wolf’s strength, and it lifted me up from the ground. I can feel the power surging through my body. Bending Mom’s shield requires a lot of mana, she’s a very powerful Priestess that had years of training. I’m a mere alpha wolf, my power doesn’t compare to hers.
“Apertum.” I breathe out.
The shield remains intact, only a hole the book can fit in opens. I’m lucky I was able to even dent it big enough that one book can go through.
I took the book from its glass case, careful not to break anything. Mom would freak out if she knew I touched one of her precious books. When my hands and the book were finally out, I had to exert another wave of mana to cover up the hole I created. Thankfully, her magic is not so different from mine. It returned back to normal.
I turned around and saw Caius’ dazed eyes looking back into mine, he quickly covered it with a smile. “You can give this back anytime you want Sir Caius” I handed him the book. Before I could say anything more he pulled me in for a tight hug, and I felt myself hugging back.
We spent the entire afternoon inside the library. I feel comfortable just sitting here reading with Caius. He has his nose buried in the book, but I would feel his eyes shifting to my direction from time to time.
Somehow I don’t feel mad anymore that they left me with him.
“If you’re feeling up to it, I would like you to meet someone.” He suddenly spoke, I looked up to him, confused. Meet someone? Here?
“Sure.” I nodded.
He dragged me all the way to the west wing where all the vampires were staying. I was reluctant at first but I know Caius won’t let anything bad happen to me, also everyone’s at the expedition. It’s just me and Caius here.
We entered his room, I know it’s his because his scent is all over the place, also- “Meet Levi.”
The dog from earlier pounced on me again, I plopped down the floor with it, because it wouldn’t stop licking my face. “He already likes you.” He chuckles, sitting down on top of his bed.
“We met earlier, he wouldn’t stop following me around.” I started scratching his stomach again. Levi laid down on the floor on his back, with his tongue out, and his tail wagging. “That explains why I couldn’t find him anywhere this morning.” He nodded to himself.
“Question, why do you have a dog?”
He shrugs. “We found him on the street on the way here.” Levi jumped on his lap and rested his head there. “The other dogs were barking at him, I remembered your story when Serephine saved you.” He scratched the back of his head shyly.
“I thought he looked like your wolf.” That got a laugh from me, although my wolf huffed at what he said. “He’s almost as white as me.” I giggled.
“I’m glad you like him. Deacon doesn’t.”
I furrowed my eyebrows. “How could he not? That’s some cute ass dog.” I sat down next to them and patted Levi on his head.
“He doesn’t like animals. He’s not a fan of them.”
My heart sank with his words. He doesn’t like wolves too?
Before I could ask anything more, a vampire suddenly barged inside the room. He looks like he’s seen hell.
“The Prince.” He blurted out with a scared look on his face. “What about him?” Caius took Levi off from his lap, and placed him down the bed. Levi snuggled under the sheets warmly.
“There was an attack, he’s badly injured.”
