He was the only one, however, who had yet to hold the baby. Luckily, it was crowded, and no one noticed. Luke was there, in the hospital room, but not there in other ways. He smiled and talked and even commented to his family. But he didn’t touch the baby.

Luke looked exhausted. Tired in a different way than Cassie, who had just undergone hours of labor. Cassie looked in need of rest, but was smiling and euphoric in her happiness. Luke looked tired in a way that never rested. His face was pale and drawn. He looked like a man who had lost everything and didn’t know why he was still here.
