Chapter 4

The stadium pulsed with raw energy under Friday night lights, eighty thousand voices merging into a thunderous roar that vibrated through Jace Harlan’s chest. The Apex Predators were down by four in the third quarter against their division rivals, the Ironclad. Jace’s helmet felt heavier tonight, the weight of secrets pressing down harder than any defensive line. Elena was somewhere in the press box, her camera capturing every snap, every brutal collision. Knowing she watched him fueled the fire in his veins. “Blue 42! Set, hut!” The snap came clean. Jace dropped back into the pocket, his gray eyes scanning the field through the face mask. Linemen clashed like gladiators, grunts and pads cracking audible even over the crowd. A blitz came from the blind side—Jace spun, evading the sack by inches, and launched a deep bomb downfield. The ball arced perfectly, spiraling into the receiver’s hands for a forty-yard gain. The sideline erupted. He pumped his fist once, then locked eyes with the stands where he knew her lens was trained. Halftime came with the score tied. In the locker room, Coach Reynolds barked adjustments while Jace sat on the bench, towel over his head, replaying the threats from the week. Marco’s warning echoed: Victor Kane was closing in, offering bounties in the underworld. Jace’s old life clawed at the edges of his new empire. He couldn’t let it touch Elena. Emerging for the second half, he spotted her briefly near the tunnel during a media timeout. She wore team colors—black and silver jersey hugging her frame, hair tied back—but her green eyes held shadows. He brushed past her under the guise of grabbing water, his fingers grazing hers. “Stay sharp,” he murmured. “After the game.” The fourth quarter turned savage. Jace took a hit that rattled his teeth, pain exploding in his shoulder, but he shook it off. On third and long, he scrambled, buying time before finding an open man in the end zone. Touchdown. The Predators took the lead. As the final seconds ticked down, defense held, sealing the win. Fireworks lit the sky. Jace raised his arms to the crowd, but his mind was already on the woman who had become his weakness and strength. Post-game chaos reigned—interviews, locker room celebrations, media swarming. Jace gave curt answers to reporters, his gaze flicking to Elena as she worked the room professionally. Their eyes met across the frenzy, a silent promise passing between them. Hours later, after mandatory appearances, he found her waiting in the private players’ parking garage, hood up against the chill. His black SUV purred to life as she slid into the passenger seat. “You were incredible out there,” she said, voice soft but laced with heat. “That last drive… it was like you were playing for something more.” “I was.” He pulled out into the night, one hand on the wheel, the other reaching for hers. The city blurred past as they drove to his penthouse, tension building with every mile. Inside the elevator, restraint shattered. Jace pinned her against the mirrored wall, mouth devouring hers in a kiss that tasted of victory and desperation. Her hands roamed his chest, still damp from the shower, nails digging in as the car ascended. The doors opened to his floor. They barely made it inside before clothes were shed in a trail across the marble. Jace lifted her effortlessly, her legs locking around his waist as he carried her to the bedroom. He laid her on the massive bed, moonlight filtering through the windows, casting silver across her skin. This wasn’t the frantic need of before; it was slower, deeper, edged with the darkness of their realities. He kissed down her body, savoring every curve, every gasp. Elena arched beneath him, fingers threading through his dark hair as his mouth found her most sensitive places. “Jace…” His name on her lips was a drug. When he finally surged into her, it was with deliberate power, eyes locked on hers. They moved together like a perfectly executed play—rhythm building, bodies slick, breaths mingling. Pleasure crested in waves, her cries filling the room as he followed her over the edge, collapsing beside her in a tangle of limbs. In the quiet aftermath, reality intruded. Elena traced the fresh bruise blooming on his ribs. “The hit you took… are you okay?” “Pain reminds me I’m alive.” He pulled her closer, his arm a protective cage. “But you? Any word from Kane’s people?” She stiffened. “A voicemail today. He knows I’m with the team. Said if I don’t come back, he’ll make sure your career ends in scandal. Gambling ties, old fights—stuff that could get you suspended.” Jace’s jaw clenched, gray eyes hardening. “Let him try. I’ve buried bigger threats.” He reached for his phone on the nightstand, scrolling through encrypted contacts. Another meeting with Marco was set for tomorrow, low-profile. Protection details, perhaps a safe house if things escalated. Elena sat up, sheet pooling around her waist, dark hair cascading over her shoulders. “I didn’t come here to destroy you, Jace. This… us… it started as fire, but now it’s consuming everything.” He sat up too, cupping her face. “Fire forges steel. You’re not destroying me—you’re making me stronger. I’ve spent years alone in this league, building walls. You tore them down. Now I fight for what’s mine.” They talked deep into the night. Elena shared more of her past: the manipulation, the isolation, the night she fled with evidence on a hidden drive. Jace confessed fragments of his underground days—fights that paid for his first training camp, debts that still lingered. Vulnerability cracked open between them, raw and real amid the passion. Morning brought strategy. Over coffee in the sunlit kitchen, Jace outlined a plan. “You keep your head down with media duties. I handle the shadows. My old crew can watch your back without you knowing. And if Kane shows, he meets me first.” She argued, fiery as ever. “I’m not some damsel, Harlan. I have the evidence. We could take it to authorities, expose the whole network.” “Too risky. League investigators are already circling me. One leak and we’re both done.” He pulled her onto his lap, kissing the protest from her lips. Desire reignited, leading to another heated encounter against the counter—urgent, possessive, her moans echoing as he claimed her again. The day unfolded with team recovery sessions. Jace pushed through physical therapy, shoulder taped, mind on the upcoming road game. Elena embedded with the crew, capturing behind-the-scenes footage, but he noticed her glances, the subtle worry. During a break, they stole minutes in a storage area, kisses frantic and hands wandering until footsteps forced them apart. That evening, Jace met Marco at a nondescript diner on the outskirts. The scarred man slid an envelope across the table. “Victor’s ramping up. Hired muscle in town, sniffing around the stadium. Your girl’s photo is circulating in certain circles.” Jace’s blood ran hot. “Double the watch. Anything happens to her, it’s on you—and I collect.” Marco smirked. “Still the same ruthless Hammer. Consider it done. But watch your back too. League’s got a mole feeding them dirt on players with ‘connections.’” Back at the penthouse, Elena waited, pacing. He updated her minimally, then distracted her with touch. They showered together, water cascading over intertwined bodies, soapy hands exploring until passion overtook them once more. Afterward, wrapped in robes on the balcony overlooking the glittering city, she leaned into him. “I’m scared, Jace. Not just for me. For us. What if this darkness wins?” “It won’t.” His voice was steel. “I’ve won harder games with worse odds. You’re my endgame.” But as they fell into bed again, bodies entwined in exhausted bliss, Jace’s phone lit up silently on the nightstand. A new message: *Game footage shows your weakness. Deliver the girl or the Predators lose their star QB.* The threats were no longer whispers. The gridiron’s shadows had followed them home. Jace held Elena tighter, mind racing through plays and counter-moves. Love in this world demanded blood, sacrifice, and unyielding dominance. He was ready to deliver all three.
