Hearing the voice from across the table, Sophia Shen almost slipped off her chair.
She wondered if her hearing was going bad at such a young age.
“You mentioned earlier that arranged marriages are meant for getting married. I believe I meet your standards, and I think I fit the criteria you’ve set for me too,” said Alexander Qin.
The Qin family was always on the move, and instead of picking an unknown woman who might have been set up by others, why not choose the one sitting in front of him?
Sophia, probably not remembering him, but he certainly remembered her.
“But I'm not your blind date. You must be mistaken. What if my actual match shows up?” Sophia said, lowering her head in embarrassment.
“But the person I was supposed to meet won’t be coming today, so it’s you. Why don’t we just go ahead with it? Honestly, I think I'm more reliable than your usual dates. Instead of constantly dealing with endless blind dates, you might want to consider me,” Alexander said confidently.
As someone used to being in control, he knew exactly how to manipulate the situation with just a few words, making Sophia feel uncertain yet intrigued.
He had never failed to achieve his goals before.
“Actually, I… well, fine, let’s do as you say. Let's get married,” Sophia said, taking a deep breath and summoning all her courage.
Rather than constantly handling countless blind dates and dealing with her relentless grandmother, this man seemed like a good option.
“Great, we’ll have dinner first. I’ll have the household registration book sent over, and we’ll head to the office in the afternoon,” Alexander said, immediately taking charge of the situation.
During dinner, Sophia kept sneaking glances at him. His every movement exuded elegance, and her anxious heart suddenly calmed down.
A man with a bit of wealth, and extremely handsome at that—having him as her husband? It seemed like a good deal.
He was probably around 6 feet tall, slim but with a strong chest and abs that she couldn’t help but notice when he leaned over.
She couldn’t help but let her mind wander, and a blush crept up on her face.
“Heh… I know I’m good-looking, but it’s not like I can satisfy your eyes just by sitting here,” came his low, teasing voice.
Sophia quickly looked down, her face burning with embarrassment.
Stop it, you p*****t, she scolded herself internally.
“Don’t think too highly of yourself. I’m just worried you’ll eat too fast and I won’t have anything left,” Alexander said, covering his teasing with a quick bite of his food.
After dinner, Alexander took care of the bill, and a delivery boy arrived with the registration book and a white bag.
He stood up slowly, crouching in front of her, his amber eyes looking at her with a rare softness, his previously cold expression now warm.
Everything felt like it was moving in slow motion.
Sophia’s heart raced, her breath caught in her chest.
Was he going to propose?
But they had just met—how should she respond? Should she act excited, or remain composed?
A sharp pain on her leg suddenly broke her thoughts.
“Ow—”
“It’s just a little pain, hold on,” Alexander said as he carefully applied iodine to the bruise on her knee.
She hadn’t even noticed she was hurt after bumping into the table earlier, but he had.
Sophia’s face turned a shade of red from embarrassment.
After leaving the Civil Affairs Bureau, she looked at the red book in her hands, then glanced at Alexander.
“So, what now?” Sophia asked, feeling a bit awkward.
“I’ll be on a business trip for two days. Let’s add each other on WeChat,” he said, handing her his phone.
Sophia, still in a daze, nodded and quickly scanned the QR code.
He sent her his address and a code for his apartment.
“This is my address. Save the code and number, just in case.”
Sophia did the same and sent him her address.
He glanced at her with a slight smile in his eyes.
“Give me your phone.”
She handed him her phone without thinking. Alexander tapped a few buttons, and soon her phone rang.
“This is my number. I’m not always on my phone, so if you need anything, just call me,” he said.
Taking her phone back, her hand brushed against his, making her heart race.
What’s going on with this man? She thought.
“Where are you going next?” he asked.
“I’ve got someone to meet. You go ahead and stay busy,” she said, turning to leave quickly.
Better not stay around this man too long—he’s too smooth, and with that appearance, he’s like the sun in winter. No one can resist that.
As soon as she left, Alexander’s phone rang. He answered, and a hurried voice came through.
“Qin dog, when will you start acting human? You use me, then turn your phone off when I need it! I’m telling you, you won’t get away with this without at least 180k!”
Alexander’s voice remained calm as he responded, “If you need something, just say it.”
The man on the other end quickly turned his tone respectful, “Thank you, Master Qin. If you need anything, just tell me. I’ll do anything.”
After the call, a black Mercedes pulled up in front of him. Had Sophia seen it, she would have realized that her new husband wasn’t just wealthy—he was someone powerful.
On the way to her best friend’s house, Sophia noticed the time was still early. She decided to visit her friend, Bella Jiang.
After graduation, Sophia had pursued her painting dream and didn’t continue to grad school, but Bella had succeeded in getting into the master’s program at their alma mater.
“Ah—” Bella screamed in disbelief, breaking the silence of the dorm.
The birds outside flew off in alarm.
“Shh, keep it down!” Sophia quickly covered Bella’s mouth.
“You went to the Civil Affairs Bureau with him on your first meeting? Is that not selling yourself out?” Bella teased, pulling Sophia’s hand down.
“I didn’t get paid, so it doesn’t count…” Sophia mumbled.
“Did you really get over Cheng Yu?” Bella asked, her tone suddenly serious.
