Chapter Five: Secrets in the Moonlight

1044 Words
Evelyn sat in silence by the fire in Lucien’s cabin, her mind spinning. After the rogues retreated and the mysterious wolves left, Lucien had brought her to this secluded place deep within the forest. She couldn’t help but notice the strange tension in his demeanor—a mixture of protectiveness and guilt. “Start talking,” Evelyn finally said, breaking the silence. “No more cryptic warnings, no more half-answers. I deserve the truth, Lucien. What am I, and why are they after me?” Lucien stood by the window, his broad shoulders illuminated by the moonlight streaming in. He ran a hand through his hair, clearly reluctant. “You’re the Moonmarked,” he said at last, turning to face her. Evelyn frowned. “What does that even mean?” “It means you’re chosen by the Moon Goddess herself,” Lucien explained, his golden eyes serious. “Your mark signifies power—a power that can tip the balance between packs. Some want to protect you… others want to exploit you. And some—like the rogues—want to kill you before you realize your potential.” Her hand instinctively went to her scar. “This?” she whispered. “This is why I’ve been hunted my whole life?” Lucien nodded. “It’s more than a scar, Evie. It’s a bond, a blessing, and a curse. It connects you to the wolves, to the Goddess… and to me.” His words sent a shiver down her spine. “And the Council? What do they want?” “The Council governs the werewolf territories,” he said, his tone dark. “They’re afraid of what you represent. A Moonmarked Luna hasn’t been seen in centuries, and the last one brought war. They think you’re a threat to their control.” Evelyn shook her head, overwhelmed. “But I’m just a healer. I don’t want any of this.” Lucien crossed the room in a few strides, crouching in front of her. “I know this is a lot,” he said, his voice softening. “But you can’t run from it anymore. The rogues are just the beginning. If the Council finds you before we’re ready—” “We?” she interrupted, raising an eyebrow. “Since when are we a team?” His lips curved into a faint smile. “Since always, Evie. You just don’t remember.” Her cheeks flushed at his words, and her mind flashed back to the vision she’d had when he kissed her. The meadow, his voice calling her name, the way he’d looked at her like she was his whole world. Lucien stood and walked to a small chest by the fireplace. He opened it and pulled out an object wrapped in black velvet. Carefully, he unwrapped it to reveal an amulet shaped like a crescent moon, its surface shimmering with an otherworldly light. “This belonged to you,” he said, handing it to her. Evelyn took it hesitantly, her fingers brushing against the cool metal. As soon as she touched it, a surge of energy coursed through her, and another memory flickered to life. --- Flashback They stood under the light of a full moon, Lucien’s arms wrapped around her protectively. She was holding the same amulet, her fingers tracing its surface. “Keep this with you, Evie,” he whispered, his forehead pressed to hers. “As long as you wear it, I’ll always find you.” “But what if you can’t?” she asked, her voice trembling. Lucien cupped her face, his golden eyes fierce. “I will. No matter what, I’ll always come for you.” --- Back to Reality Evelyn gasped, the memory slipping away as quickly as it had come. She clutched the amulet tightly, her heart racing. “Why didn’t I remember this?” she asked, her voice shaking. “Because I made sure you wouldn’t,” Lucien admitted, his expression heavy with guilt. “After the attack that tore us apart, I used the bond to erase your memories and hide your identity. It was the only way to keep you safe.” Evelyn stared at him, her emotions a whirlwind. Anger, confusion, and a strange sense of longing warred within her. “You had no right to make that choice for me.” “You’re right,” he said quietly, his gaze never leaving hers. “But I’d do it again if it meant keeping you alive.” Before Evelyn could respond, the cabin door burst open. A young man with sandy hair and piercing blue eyes stumbled inside, his clothes torn and bloodied. “Lucien,” he gasped, collapsing against the wall. Lucien was at his side in an instant, helping him to a chair. “Ronan, what happened?” “The rogues,” Ronan panted. “They’re regrouping. They’ve found a new leader—someone powerful. They’re planning a full-scale attack on your territory.” Lucien’s jaw tightened. “When?” “Soon,” Ronan replied. “And they’re not just after your pack. They’re coming for *her*.” Evelyn felt the blood drain from her face. “Me? Why?” “Because,” Ronan said, his eyes flicking to her scar, “you’re the key to whatever they’re planning. They think if they capture you, they can claim the Moon Goddess’s power for themselves.” Lucien growled low in his throat, the sound sending a chill down Evelyn’s spine. “Over my dead body,” he snarled. Ronan reached into his pocket and pulled out a crumpled piece of parchment. He handed it to Lucien, who unfolded it carefully. Evelyn leaned closer, her breath hitching when she saw what was written: “Bring the Moonmarked to us by the next full moon, or we’ll burn everything to the ground.“ Lucien’s eyes blazed with fury as he crumpled the note in his fist. He turned to Evelyn, his voice deadly calm. “They want a war? I’ll give them one.” Evelyn’s heart pounded as she stared at him, the weight of her destiny settling on her shoulders. She didn’t know if she was ready for what was coming, but one thing was certain: there was no turning back now.
