Chapter 14

The black SUV idled at the curb, its sleek exterior gleaming under the streetlights. Jayden leaned casually against the passenger door, his posture as calm and collected as ever. His charcoal-grey suit was perfectly tailored, the sharp lines accentuating his broad shoulders and lean frame. His crisp white shirt was unbuttoned just enough to reveal the faint glimpse of a silver chain resting against his chest—a subtle reminder of the man beneath the polished exterior. His cold, detached demeanor was his armor, but his piercing gaze betrayed something else entirely. The second Sofia stepped out of her apartment building, Jayden straightened up, his jaw tightening. She was a vision in blue. The dress flowed like liquid silk, hugging her frame in all the right places and cascading effortlessly down her legs. Her heels clicked softly against the pavement, each step measured and deliberate. Her hair framed her face in soft waves, and her lips—painted a delicate shade of rose—curved slightly as if she were lost in her own thoughts. Jayden’s breath caught for a fraction of a second. It wasn’t just the way she looked—it was the energy she carried, a mix of vulnerability. and confidence that made it impossible to look away. For Sofia, the nerves buzzed under her skin like static. Every step she took toward him felt heavier than the last. She could feel his eyes on her, that intense gaze that seemed to peel back every layer of pretense she had. Her mind raced with thoughts: "Am I overthinking this? Maybe this is too much. But what if he likes it? No, no—he doesn’t care about things like this. Or does he? Why does he have to look so… perfect? Stop it, Sofia! Focus." By the time she reached him, her composure was back in place, though her heart hammered in her chest. Jayden opened the passenger door without a word, stepping aside to let her in. His expression was unreadable, but his eyes lingered on her for just a moment too long. It was enough to send a shiver down her spine. Sofia hesitated briefly, smoothing her dress before slipping into the car. She caught a faint trace of his cologne—spicy, woodsy, and entirely intoxicating—as he closed the door behind her. He circled around to the driver’s side and got in, his movements precise and deliberate. For a moment, the car was silent. The air between them was heavy, charged with unspoken words and unresolved tension. Jayden glanced at her from the corner of his eye. "Ready?" he asked, his voice low and steady, betraying nothing. Sofia turned her head slightly, meeting his gaze. Her lips parted, but instead of answering, she nodded once. With that, Jayden shifted the car into gear, his hands steady on the wheel. As they merged onto the quiet city streets. The silence in the car was deafening, despite the soft hum of the engine. Sofia sat stiffly, her hands clasped tightly over her lap, the smooth fabric of her blue dress cool against her skin. She stole glances at Jayden as he drove, his features illuminated by the streetlights flashing past. He looked impossibly calm, his sharp jawline set in a neutral expression, his hands gripping the wheel with the ease of someone utterly in control. ‎ ‎But that calmness was what unnerved her the most. ‎ ‎Her mind raced as she stared out the window. Why isn’t he saying anything? Why am I even here? God, I must look ridiculous—what if he’s thinking that too? She adjusted the hem of her dress nervously, biting her lip as she sneaked another glance at him. ‎ ‎And then he spoke, his voice cutting through the quiet like a blade. ‎“We’re not going to the restaurant.” ‎ ‎Sofia blinked, startled. “What?” ‎ ‎“I changed the plan.” His tone was even, as if he hadn’t just dropped a bombshell. ‎ ‎Her heart lurched. What does he mean, changed the plan? “To where?” she asked cautiously, trying to keep her voice steady. ‎ ‎“You’ll see.” ‎ ‎That was it. No explanation. No reassurance. Just two words that left her spiraling into even more questions. She fidgeted with her clutch, trying to calm herself. The car turned down a quieter street, leaving behind the bustle of the city. The soft yellow glow of streetlights faded, replaced by darker roads and the faint glimmer of the moon. ‎ ‎Her anxiety was at an all-time high. ‎Where are we going? Or… oh my God, what if he’s just tired of me? ‎ ‎She peeked at him again, his profile as unreadable as ever. She wanted to ask, to demand answers, but the words caught in her throat. ‎ ‎The car finally slowed, pulling into what looked like a gated property. Sofia’s breath hitched as the gates opened smoothly, revealing a secluded driveway lined with trees and dim lights. Jayden parked, turned off the engine, and stepped out without a word. He walked around and opened her door, his movements fluid and deliberate. ‎ ‎“Come on,” he said, offering her his hand. ‎ ‎She hesitated but took it, her heart pounding as her heels clicked against the stone driveway. The air was cooler here, crisp and fragrant with the scent of blooming flowers. She looked around, confused, until they emerged onto a private balcony overlooking the city. ‎ ‎Her breath caught. The view was breathtaking—a sea of glittering lights stretching out endlessly beneath a canopy of stars. ‎ ‎“I thought this would be quieter,” Jayden said, leaning casually against the railing, his hands in his pockets. He was watching her, his gaze piercing but calm. ‎ ‎Sofia swallowed, her nerves making her voice waver. “It’s… beautiful.” ‎ ‎He nodded, his expression unreadable. “Figured you’d appreciate something less crowded.” ‎ ‎Her chest tightened. The intimacy of the moment, the sheer thoughtfulness of it, was overwhelming. She stepped closer to the railing, gripping it as she tried to steady her breathing. ‎ ‎Jayden stayed silent, watching her quietly as she struggled to process everything. Finally, she found the courage to ask, “Why did you bring me here?” ‎ ‎He tilted his head slightly, his lips curling into the faintest of smirks. “Because I wanted to.” ‎Her stomach flipped. Of course, that was his answer. Cool, simple, and utterly maddening. ‎ ‎The silence stretched, heavy with tension. Sofia tried to find the right thing to say, but the words escaped her. Instead, she found herself blurting out, “You’re driving me insane, you know that?” ‎ ‎Jayden raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Am I?” ‎ ‎“Yes!” she exclaimed, spinning to face him fully. “You disappear for weeks without a word, someone else is lecturing in your place, and then you—” She gestured wildly at their surroundings. “You bring me here and act like it’s nothing!” ‎ ‎His smirk widened, amusement flickering in his eyes. “So I’ve been on your mind?” ‎ ‎Her cheeks flushed, and she turned back to the railing, muttering, “That’s not the point.” ‎ ‎Jayden pushed off the railing and stepped closer, his presence warm and imposing beside her. He leaned down slightly, his voice dropping to a low murmur. ‎“Maybe you’ve been on mine too.” ‎ ‎Her breath caught, and she froze, her pulse pounding in her ears. She didn’t dare look at him, afraid of what she might see—or feel. The weight of his words settled over her, and for a brief, electrifying moment, the world seemed to stop. ‎ ‎And then, just as suddenly, Jayden straightened, his composure snapping back into place. “Come on,” he said, gesturing toward a small table set up with drinks. “Let’s enjoy the view.” ‎ ‎
