Chapter 2

1423 Words
After the conversation with Amelia, Sofia’s mind is still running on overdrive, analyzing every little detail from class. She walks the campus path with a quiet storm brewing inside her. Was Jayden interested? Or was she reading too much into it? ‎“I’m probably just imagining things. I’ve worked so hard to be calm, to carry myself a certain way... Why does he make it feel like everything I’ve built is falling apart?” ‎The thoughts circle around in her head like a whirlwind. She’s never felt so unsettled by someone’s presence. And yet, she wants to feel it again. ‎Sofia, still lost in thought, doesn’t see Jayden until he speaks, his voice a smooth interruption to her inner turmoil. ‎“Sofia,” his voice calls, warm and commanding. ‎She pauses, turning toward him, expecting him to just pass by, but he’s standing by a bench near the campus courtyard, leaning casually against a tree. His posture is relaxed, but there’s something about his gaze that makes her heart skip a beat. Jayden,” she responds, trying to keep her tone even, though her voice betrays her nerves. ‎“I didn’t think I’d see you this late,” he says, offering a small, knowing smile. ‎“Just on my way to the dorm,” Sofia replies, trying to keep the conversation light. “What about you?” ‎“Same,” Jayden says with a shrug. “But, uh, I wanted to ask you about that recent paper you submitted. There’s a few things I’d like to discuss, but I thought it might be better to do it in person.” He pauses, as though waiting for her reaction. “How about we grab a coffee sometime? Talk through it in more detail?” ‎Sofia’s pulse quickens, but she tries to mask her excitement, keeping her voice calm. ‎“Oh, sure. I’d be happy to go over it with you.” ‎Jayden smirks, an almost playful glint in his eyes. “Great. How does Friday evening sound? We can meet at that café near campus.” ‎The request is casual, but Sofia can sense the subtle undercurrent beneath it. He’s offering more than just an academic meeting. The thought makes her stomach flutter. ‎“That works,” she says, unable to hide the small smile tugging at her lips. As Jayden walks away, he calls over his shoulder, “I’ll send you a reminder. See you then, Sofia.” ‎She watches him leave, a mix of exhilaration and confusion swirling in her chest. “Did he just ask me on a date?” Sofia thinks, her mind racing. “Or am I just overthinking it again?” ‎That evening, after she’s settled in her dorm room, Sofia’s phone buzzes. It’s a message from Jayden, and her heart skips when she sees his name on the screen. ‎“Hey, just confirming – 7 pm, Friday at the café near campus. See you then! - J.” ‎Sofia stares at the message for a moment, biting her lip as she tries to control the excitement bubbling inside her. The formal tone of the message makes it clear that Jayden is keeping things professional on the surface, but Sofia knows better. She can’t help but smile. ‎She types a quick reply, trying to sound as composed as possible. “Looking forward to it! See you then.” ‎Sofia sets her phone down, her thoughts whirling once again. ‎“What is this? It’s not a class meeting... Is it a date? But no. I can’t just jump to conclusions. I’ve been working so hard to stay calm, to keep control. But what if this is more? What if Jayden is...” ‎She shakes her head, trying to clear her thoughts. No, she can’t let herself go there. She’s been through too much to just fall for someone like that. But even as she tells herself this, she feels something inside her stirring, something she can’t ignore. ‎She takes a deep breath. “I’ll just see how it goes. No expectations. Just a meeting... right?” As Jayden walks away from Sofia, a slow, almost imperceptible smile plays on his lips. His mind is far from at ease, despite the calm exterior he projects. There’s something about Sofia that keeps gnawing at him, something different. ‎ ‎She’s like the rest of them... right? He scoffs inwardly. He’s not the kind of man to get lost in thoughts about one person, but Sofia... She’s been on his mind more than he’s comfortable admitting. He’s drawn to her like a magnet, the way her confidence exudes and the calmness with which she carries herself. She doesn't act out. She doesn't beg for attention. In that way, she’s intriguing. But it's that quiet confidence, that... control that makes him question. ‎ ‎Is she like the others? ‎ ‎His past experiences with women have always been predictable. They’ve all played their roles—admiration from afar, eager smiles, the rush of affection that comes with the chase, and the boredom that follows when they fall into predictable patterns. He’s always in control, always the one to call the shots. But something about Sofia makes him second-guess. It’s not the typical game he’s used to. ‎ ‎Why does she feel different? ‎ ‎Jayden is a man who acts on impulse. He doesn’t waste time pondering emotions, especially not the soft, tangled feelings that have started to emerge when it comes to Sofia. The logical part of his mind tells him to keep his distance, treat it like any other situation—give her the academic excuse, see how she responds, then move on. But deep down, he feels a pull, a subtle force that’s unlike anything he’s felt in a long time. It doesn’t make sense. She hasn’t done anything to warrant it. She hasn’t tried to impress him, and yet... she has his attention. ‎ ‎She’s too calm, too different from the others... it’s like she’s not even trying to impress me. ‎ ‎He laughs softly under his breath. ‎ ‎What am I even thinking? ‎ ‎He’s been around women who put on shows, who perform their charm, who try to fit themselves into the mold of what he wants them to be. But Sofia? She doesn’t seem interested in playing by anyone’s rules. There’s a distance in her eyes, a mystery he can’t quite read. It both irritates him and fascinates him. ‎ ‎I need to know if she’s like the rest of them... I need to figure her out. She can’t just keep floating in my head like this. ‎ ‎He thinks about the invitation he casually threw out there—the coffee date framed as a discussion about that paper. It’s the perfect excuse to get her alone. But there’s more to it. Much more. In the silence of his thoughts, he realizes he’s curious to see how she reacts to him. How she reacts to him when he’s being himself—unfiltered, unaffected. He’s the man everyone notices, but Sofia? She doesn’t seem phased by him at all. ‎ ‎That’s what draws me to her. She doesn’t need me. She doesn’t look at me like every other woman. That’s what I can’t shake. I want to see what’s behind that calm facade. ‎ ‎His gaze shifts ahead as he walks, his footsteps deliberate, matching the rhythm of his thoughts. He knows he’s not being entirely honest with himself. He wants to test her, yes—but something deeper is stirring. A feeling he hasn’t acknowledged until now. ‎ ‎I’m not like the others. I don’t let emotions guide me. I’m in control. ‎ ‎But when it comes to Sofia, for the first time in a long while, his control feels... fragile. ‎ ‎No. I’ll keep it cool. She’s just another student, just another paper to grade. Just another test. ‎ ‎And yet, with every step he takes toward his office, the quiet hum of anticipation builds. He’s not sure what to expect on Friday, but he’s ready to find out. Something tells him that Sofia is not like the others. He can’t quite put his finger on it yet, but the pull is undeniable. And maybe, just maybe, he doesn’t want to figure her out too quickly. ‎ ‎ ‎
