Many weeks passed in Eldora, and peace returned to the city it had not known since the days before the attempt on Alfrahil"s life. Mergin"s inquiries, though supposedly secret, had set the entire city on edge, with no one above his suspicions. Lord Krenem and the Shadows continued the investigation much more quietly and effectively. One of Zarthir"s servants had shown the investigators an underground tunnel that Zarthir had constructed in his house many years to serve as a bolthole against a day such as the one where Mergin had appeared at his door.
