A soft beginning

Episode 4: A Soft Beginning Elena returned to the bookstore the next day, surprised at how much she’d looked forward to it. Something about Tom’s quiet strength made the weight on her chest feel a little lighter. He was already there, flipping through a novel. When he saw her, he smiled—not wide, not forced. Just enough. They sat in the same spot, coffee in hand, and talked more this time. About childhood. Music. The silence between them began to feel less like absence and more like peace. Tom didn’t ask too much, and Elena didn’t offer too little. She told him how Daniel had made her laugh at the worst moments. He told her how Claire used to sing while cooking, off-key but fearless. They laughed, really laughed—and it felt strange. Good. Guilty. Elena’s smile faded for a second. “Is it wrong? To laugh? To… move on?” Tom shook his head. “It’s not moving on. It’s carrying them differently.” She looked at him—really looked—and saw someone who understood the language of loss the way she did. Maybe this was what healing looked like—not grand gestures, but quiet mornings with coffee and a little less pain. And for the first time, she didn’t feel alone in her grief.
