Chapter 49 – Brothers, Beat Him!

As Tang Enqi walked away, Xu Xiao Jia pursed her lips and couldn’t help asking, “Hey, Luo Ye, do you know this white lotus?” “White lotus?” Luo Ye looked at Xu Xiao Jia, puzzled. Is the white lotus referring to Tang Enqi? He didn’t like her any more, but whether she’s a white lotus… he really didn’t know. Either way, it didn’t matter to him now. “You’re not into that white lotus, are you?” “No, I liked her in the past,” Luo Ye answered honestly. Xu Xiao Jia rolled her eyes, sighed, “Being so honest just makes you an easy target.” Luo Ye smiled, “My aunt told me the same, which is why I became a novelist—if I avoid dealing with people, I won’t get scammed.” Xu Xiao Jia: … “By the way, where were we? Right, the class monitor! Is the monitor still upset? How about we call him out for dinner tonight?” Seeing the tiny girl suddenly tiptoeing around, Luo Ye hesitated, “I don’t think that’s a good idea—he hasn’t broken up yet.” “What? He hasn’t broken up? Oh right, you just said he’s about to split. Which trash‑girl is playing with the monitor’s feelings?” Xu Xiao Jia’s small frame twisted into an angry scowl. Luo Ye pointed toward the third cafeteria. “The one who just passed… Liu Bing Xin.” “What??” Xu Xiao Jia’s face went white. By the way, Liu Bing Xin and Tang Enqi are roommates. Since Xu Xiao Jia doesn’t get along with either of them, she basically has no friends—most college life is spent in the dorm, and social circles revolve around it. “You’re talking about that little flirt?” Luo Ye’s eyes widened, “What kind of public‑shaming talk is that?” “Oh, and I forgot there’s a guy involved too.” Xu Xiao Jia’s dead‑pan stare locked onto Luo Ye, voice flat, “When they break up, let me know.” After learning that Li Haoyang’s girlfriend is Liu Bing Xin, Xu Xiao Jia seemed to lose her soul entirely. Honestly, the guy’s mood swings are insane—one minute crying, the next laughing. If the coach paired up with this kind of person, their future would have zero peace. Xu Xiao Jia headed to the cafeteria for a meal. Luo Ye bought an energy drink at a nearby shop, returned to the dorm, and planned to lie down a bit before class. Room 515 was dead silent. No class in the first period meant most people slept in; if the whole morning was free, they’d snooze until noon. If it weren’t for the Fairy Senior’s habit of morning runs, Luo Ye would be just another lazy sleeper. He’d bought breakfast for the entire floor, went back, and looked at his roommates’ sleeping faces. A strange feeling rose inside him—like a dad who gets up early for work, watching his kids still in bed. He felt a surge of accomplishment. He cleared his throat, ready to rouse them for breakfast, when… A panda appeared right in front of him, meeting his gaze. Luo Ye jumped, then realized it wasn’t a panda at all—it was Li Haoyang. “Coach? Are you… still alive?” Li Haoyang’s eyes were vacant, dark circles drawn like ink strokes. “Huh?” Li Haoyang stared listlessly at Luo Ye, bewildered, “Am I still alive?” “I’m asking you.” “I don’t know.” … Was his brain crashing from too much sorrow? Seeing Li Haoyang’s hollow stare made Luo Ye recall the day he got his acceptance letter to Jiang University. Getting into Jiang meant he could be with Tang Enqi, so he rushed the news to her. She never replied. Not the first day, not the second, not the whole summer. At first, Luo Ye felt the same hopelessness as Li Haoyang—life seemed pointless without that connection. But life’s ultimately yours to live; you can’t stay stuck in shadows forever. Luo Ye patted Li Haoyang’s shoulder, solemnly, “Coach, want to have a drink tonight?” The drinking capacity in Room 515: Shen Qiao and Luo Ye accounted for 110 %, while Wang Dachi and Li Haoyang owed the remaining 10 %. Still, Luo Ye invited the coach. When the word “drink” left his mouth, Li Haoyang’s eyes brightened, as if he’d found a new source of spirit. The scary part is being forced to mourn alone. But the coach—and his own “father”—were there. … “Today we have an extra evening self‑study on Politics and Policy; tomorrow the admin teacher is on leave.” After the second afternoon class, the class representative announced the notice. An audible groan rippled through the classroom. Li Haoyang, the class monitor, had slept through the whole day—he’d pulled an all‑night. During that time, Liu Bing Xin visited him, but couldn’t wake him, so she left. No one had ever told Liu Bing Xin why Li Haoyang suddenly turned into this. That didn’t matter, because the senior who had been hanging around Liu Bing Xin for days showed up at the classroom door after that class. Senior year senior, Shuai Kun. When he first pursued Tang Enqi, he’d camp outside the women’s dorm to meet her. Now he’d switched targets, using the same tactic—camping outside Liu Bing Xin’s classroom. Shuai Kun, true to his name, was handsome—about a third as good‑looking as Shen Qiao—wearing suspenders, hair part‑ed in the middle. Luo Ye knew the guy and relayed the story to his three roommates. In an instant, the atmosphere in Room 515 shifted. Li Haoyang surged like an awakened lion; Shen Qiao’s eyes hardened, looking like a cold‑shouldered campus hunk; even Wang Dachi resembled a snarling teddy bear. Soon most of the class filtered out, leaving only the four in Room 515 and Tang Enqi and Liu Bing Xin. Seeing the room nearly empty, Shuai Kun walked straight in, heading for Liu Bing Xin. She flushed nervously; she hadn’t expected the senior to be so bold, squatting at the doorway of her lecture hall. Her boyfriend was still around. “Junior Liu Bing Xin, want to grab dinner together?” Shuai Kun sat beside her, smiling. Liu Bing Xin shook her head. Though she wasn’t a saint, she wasn’t bold enough to accept a date from a suitor in front of her boyfriend. She was about to refuse when a loud smack on the table erupted. Li Haoyang rose and slammed his palm onto the desk. The muscle lines on his arm were clear, making him look terrifying. Seeing that, Luo Ye, Wang Dachi, and Shen Qiao all sprang to their feet. “Let’s eat that damn dinner!” “Brothers, beat him up!” The words barely left their mouths before the four of them charged, dragging Shuai Kun into a blind spot away from any cameras and raining punches and kicks on him.
