Chapter 44 – Delicious Boxed Meals

1174 Words
“Roll call starts now.” Li Haoyang stood at the podium. In the middle of the first row sat Luo Ye, Shen Qiao, and Wang Dachi, locking eyes with Li Haoyang. “Xu Xia Jia.” “Present.” “Luo Ye.” “Present.” … As Li Haoyang called names, his gaze swept the front row. He saw the three of them exchanging cheeky glances. Their goofy expressions made Li Haoyang want to laugh, but roll call had to stay serious, so he fought to keep his humor in check. “Zhang San.” “Present.” “Li Si…” “Present.” Li Si raised his head curiously, looking at Li Haoyang. Though his name was a placeholder, the brazen teasing felt a bit over the line. After roll call, everyone went their separate ways—some home, some to eat dinner, some back to the dorm. Li Haoyang reunited with Luo Ye and the others. Seeing the coach’s face, the three wore worried looks. “What’s with those expressions?” Li Haoyang asked, puzzled. He glanced at his phone, then said, “Let’s go grab something to eat.” Shen Qiao asked, “Why aren’t you eating with your girlfriend today?” “She said she’s got something to do. Whatever.” Luo Ye and Shen Qiao exchanged a look, both understanding the subtext. Wang Dachi slung an arm around Li Haoyang, sympathizing, “A real man can bend or stay rigid. Come on, dinner’s on me—beef noodles, extra scallions and cilantro.” Just then, Luo Ye remembered the stack of boxed meals he’d left untouched. He jabbed Wang Dachi with a quick punch and said, “Back to the dorm, I’ve got something good.” “Whoa, you’re on fire, Kid Ye.” Wang Dachi pushed Li Haoyang aside and looped his arm around Luo Ye, as if anyone could instantly become his bro. Back in the dorm, the tabletop was piled with colorful, aromatic boxed meals. Wang Dachi stared in disbelief, “Boxed meals? If you say this is a banquet, I’ll believe you.” Shen Qiao raised an eyebrow, smiling half‑heartedly, “Luo Ye, this doesn’t look like it came from a restaurant. You didn’t go home—who made these?” Under the three roommates’ stare, Luo Ye stepped back a half. “Senior made them.” The moment “senior” left his mouth, Shen Qiao instantly knew who he meant. He hadn’t expected things to move this fast. Wang Dachi, unaware, turned to Li Haoyang, tapped his head, and asked, “Another senior, coach? You aware of that?” “Kind of… I once saw a girl hanging around Luo Ye during a morning run, didn’t get a good look.” Li Haoyang recalled that day—Liu Bing Xin mentioned a girl following Luo Ye, but he didn’t see her. Wang Dachi’s gaze lingered on Luo Ye with a mischievous glint. “Kid Ye, who is she? She’s so mysterious. I thought it was Tang Enqi, the freshman beauty—and you went to school together in high school.” “Tang Enqi?” Hearing the familiar name, Luo Ye shook his head, “I liked her in high school, but not any more.” “Whoa, we know—you’re only here because of her. Without her you’d never have met us.” Luo Ye’s expression froze. If he hadn’t liked Tang Enqi, would he have ever run into the fairy senior? He figured maybe not; Su Baizhou was Gu Mingxuan’s student, so a future encounter was possible but unlikely—pure luck, a long shot. He still owed Tang Enqi thanks for pushing him to choose Jiang University. After all, he never came because his cousin was there; his original plan was to attend a school where no one knew him and focus on writing. Seeing Luo Ye fall silent, Wang Dachi shouted, “You’re not seriously still pining over Tang Enqi, are you? I’ll tell you—Enqi is mine.” “Get lost. Everything’s yours? Go chase them yourself.” Luo Ye retorted dismissively. Now everyone could see that the rich freshman, the show‑off heir, was pursuing Tang Enqi feverishly. Was it Gao Yuming? The basketball star, buff and handsome, a typical rich‑kid with a cocky attitude—practically perfect. Compared to that, Wang Dachi looked even more pathetic. Luo Ye felt a brief pang of sympathy for him. No one at Jiang University knew about Luo Ye’s relationship with Su Baizhou, not even Shen Qiao; they just sensed they were acquaintances, details unknown. Luo Ye planned to keep a low profile until he could surprise everyone later. The group dug into the boxed meals. Knowing these came from Su Baizhou’s hands, they weren’t ordinary fare for regular folks. Just one bite, even the picky Li Haoyang was impressed, giving a thumbs‑up. Within ten minutes the plates were cleared, the friends slumped back in their chairs, looking blissfully stuffed. Luo Ye snuck a photo of the scene and sent it to the fairy senior. Luo Ye: photo Luo Ye: we nailed it! Su Baizhou, seeing the pictures, smirked and replied, piece of cake. At that moment Su Baizhou was sitting in a classroom, interviewing freshmen who wanted to join the student council. The recruitment had just ended, and the turnover would happen this week—both tasks slated for completion soon. Glancing at the dazzling girl in a white dress, Su Baizhou asked coolly, “Why do you want to join the student council?” The girl looked at Su Baizhou, feeling the senior’s overwhelming aura, the ice‑queen vibes radiating around her. Everyone in the room watched them. On stage, the campus beauty, the ice‑queen, a talent that stunned the crowd. Below, the freshman beauty in the white dress, hopeful to become the next campus queen after Su Baizhou graduates. Their conversation captured everyone’s attention, leaving the other interviewers speechless. “I… want to be someone like you.” Tang Enqi said with determination. She wanted to be as outstanding as Su Baizhou—a decisive student‑council president, a campus prodigy admired by all. “Is that so?” Su Baizhou remained expressionless, glanced briefly at the girl, and said lightly, “We’ll let you know later.” Her single line cut off all the rehearsed pleas Tang Enqi had prepared. Su Baizhou didn’t like her. From the freshman’s eyes, she saw ambition—an unquenchable desire to climb, never satisfied, always aiming for the coveted spot. At school, she aimed for student‑council president; outside, she dreamed of becoming general manager, maybe even CEO. She’d never settle, seeking to claim everything beautiful for herself. Yet she hid it well, appearing like a carefree, desire‑free girl. But she was still too green; Su Baizhou saw through her in one glance. Because Su Baizhou herself was even more formidable.
