Chapter 75: Fool

1163 Words
A few days slipped by unnoticed. Another hellish Monday. Luo Ye wore a face of pure agony, as if life had sanded away his edges and even his soul had been sucked out. During that stretch his body and mind endured double t*****e. Twenty pages of knowledge points to recite every day, plus the long‑run training he kept up, and finally the sports meet was tomorrow. But why isn’t the sports meet today!? Why can’t they cancel this cursed full‑class Monday? Watching Professor Li Ping stand at the podium, Luo Ye knew the next question would be aimed right at him. “Class monitor, answer this one.” Just as he’d feared. Luo Ye sighed and rose amid the smug grins of Wang Da Chui and Li Hao Yang. “Teacher, I …” He was about to say he didn’t know. But when he saw the problem on the blackboard, he froze. That question… he actually knows it! He’d memorized it from the textbook. Instinctively, he rattled off the standard answer, confidence flooding his face as if he’d been reborn. Wang Da Chui and Li Hao Yang stared in disbelief. Even Professor Li Ping pushed up his bifocals and gave Luo Ye a surprised look. What’s going on? Did this kid suddenly open his meridian? “Not bad, correct. Take a seat.” After class, Luo Ye felt like a dragon on fire; as soon as the computer lecture ended, he finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel. Two more lectures remained, but for Luo Ye the day was already over. After all, once you survive the hardest part, the rest is a piece of cake, totally negligible. So that day vanished just as quickly. The next morning, at six a.m., Luo Ye opened his eyes. The opening ceremony of the sports meet was set for 10 a.m., with some fancy performances later. That didn’t matter—he’d only signed up for the 3,000‑meter run, which wouldn’t start until the afternoon, so the first day of the meet was basically a holiday for him. Still, he headed to the stands because the very first event was the 60‑meter dash’s first elimination round. The “fairy” senior had signed up for that event. She’d entered the 60 m, the 800 m, and the 3,000 m. No joke—she hadn’t competed in any school meet for two years, and now she’s making a grand gesture. Two long distances, one sprint. After the opening ceremony the stands were nearly empty. It’s a university meet, not a high school where every class is forced to watch. Since it’s optional, who really wants to sit through three days of competition when you’ve got a three‑day vacation? On the field’s grass, dozens of small tents dotted the area—athlete rest zones, logistics, and the student‑government crew of referees and staff. Even though the stands were sparse, the field buzzed; the student council’s various departments totaled over a hundred people, all gathered there. Luo Ye, Li Hao Yang, and Shen Qiao sat in the stands, waiting for the men’s 100‑meter to kick off. Wang Da Chui had entered that event. He’d decked out in his favorite tracksuit and dust‑carded running shoes, warming up on lane 2. “Leap‑clown!” Li Hao Yang barked without remorse. Shen Qiao already had his phone up, recording Wang Da Chui’s entire sprint. A badge with the number 250 was stuck to Wang’s back, meaning he was athlete 250—the perfect number for him. The g*n cracked, and Wang exploded off the blocks, barreling through the finish in just over ten seconds. Six lanes, top two advance. Wang’s luck was insane; his heat had no real competition, and he snagged first place. Shen Qiao’s face fell as he deleted the fresh video. Wang Da Chui plopped next to the three of them, grinning like a kid with candy. “Brother Chui, you handsome or what?” “Just lucky,” Shen Qiao replied. The other two nodded. Next up was the second group; those events are organized by department, only the 3,000 m is open‑entry. After a long wait, the women’s 60‑meter finally rolled. In the first round, Yu Qiu Yu crushed the competition, winning her heat and becoming a top contender for the title. By the fourth round Luo Ye finally spotted the fairy senior. The crowd was still thin—only seventy‑odd people—but everyone froze when they saw who was on lane 3. A girl with a ponytail, dressed in loose black clothes—who was she? Why so gorgeous? Wait, she looks familiar… Some guessed. No one had imagined Su Bai Zhu would show up at this meet, but her appearance was the biggest surprise of the day. Soon staff announced her events: besides the 60 m, she’d also run the 800 m and the 3,000 m. The news was plastered on the “confession wall.” Su Bai Zhu took second in the fourth heat and moved on to the next round. Knowing the “ice‑queen” was competing drew more spectators to the stands—she might be untouchable, but she was undeniably eye‑catching. At some point the two other guys on the stands drifted away from Luo Ye, leaving only Shen Qiao smiling. When Su Bai Zhu started her race, Luo Ye shouted louder than anyone else, almost drowning out the announcer’s mic. He was mortified, his face turning beet red. Even though Su Bai Zhu led early, she was overtaken and finished second. They joked that the “ice queen” had been scared off by Luo Ye’s roar. Wang Da Chui, l*****g his lips, said, “You’re a hardcore Su Bai Zhu fan, huh? Crazy, I am too.” More and more people packed into the stands—what started as seventy‑odd grew to three or four hundred. Since Su Bai Zhu stepped down as student‑government president, the “ice queen” had become a rare sight on campus. Lately, the campus’s looks‑queen role had passed to Tang En Qi, and nobody had seen the icy goddess in ages. Turns out her popularity never faded. After her race, Su Bai Zhu lingered on the grass, watching the other heats, then headed for the athletes’ rest area. Qin Yu Wen jogged over with a bottle of water, eyes wide, “You’re amazing, Zhu Zhu! Look at the stands—since the confession wall announced you were competing, the crowd’s quadrupled in half an hour. You’re like a celebrity!” Su Bai Zhu glanced at the stands. People were indeed thicker, but she still spotted Luo Ye’s spot. Remembering how her freshman junior had been shouting encouragement from the bleachers, she murmured, “Fool.”
