Douglas nodded rather uncertainly. "I guess so ... Why -aren't you and Daphne all that close?" "Not really". Bruno stood up and walked over to the window. He watched Daphne and Caroline as they picked their way carefully over the rough path to the beach. They were holding hands, moving down the stony track and clutching at each other to keep their balance. The sound of their giggling reached his ears and Bruno turned away, irritated and vaguely disturbed -though he couldn't understand why ... "We used to be", he went on; crossing the room again and standing over Douglas. "She seems different lately I don't know..." He gave Douglas a searching look.
