Shadows of the Wire

Like you've seen a ghost. Lagos eats ghosts whole." His fingers brushed hers as he closed her hand around the fob—warm, callused, lingering just a beat too long. She swallowed the knot in her throat. "Thanks. Ow you." "Collect later." He turned, grabbing a fake manifest from his bench. "Now move." The ladder creaked under her weight as she dropped into the dark. Cool, musty air hit her like a slap—tunnels snaking under the city, veins of forgotten pipes and fiber optics. Her glasses auto-lit, casting a green glow on graffiti-scrawled walls: The Net Owns You in faded marker. She jogged, bag thumping, the EMP fob heavy in her pocket. Ten minutes in, the tunnel widened into a junction—abandoned server farm, relics from the old grid wars. She slumped against a crate, pulling out her deck. Fingers flew: trace the signal. Echo's code blinked back, a single ping stronger now. Aisha. Deeper. Follow the wire. Her breath caught. Did it know her path? She jacked in quickly, the NetVeil pulling her under. Flashes: not her memories this time, but code streams—blueprints of Lagos' power grid, flickering like a heartbeat. A blackout blueprint, timed for dawn. Corps towers are going dark. Streets are erupting. And then—a face. Not Papa's. A woman's sharp features, eyes like shattered glass. "Find me," she whispered, voice glitching into static. "Before the hunters find you both." Aisha yanked free, gasping. Who was that? Echo's maker? A trap? Footsteps echoed from the tunnel behind her—heavy, deliberate. Not drones. Boots on concrete. She spun, the deck clutched tight. The EMP fob burned in her fist. But when the figure stepped into the green light, it wasn't a hunter in black. It was the salaryman from the den. The one who'd bought her client's nightmare. And he held a g*n—real steel, not a holo-bluff—pointed right at her chest. "You shouldn't have seen that code, scavenger," he said, voice calm as death. "Hand it over. Or I will reformat you the old-fashioned way."
