Uninvited Guest

The grand ballroom of the Grand Hotel hummed with the sound of money. Crystal chandeliers hung above tables covered in white silk. The Mayor Charity Gala was the apex of Crestwood City high society. It was where political favors were traded and corporate monopolies were born. Marcus Vance stood near the center of the room. He held a glass of champagne. He blocked the path of an older hedge fund manager. "The Zenith crash is a temporary market overreaction, Richard," Marcus pitched smoothly. Sweat formed on his forehead. "My family is pivoting. We are opening a new venture capital fund tomorrow morning. A bridge loan of ten million dollars buys you a twenty percent equity stake." Richard looked at Marcus with cold calculation. "Your grandfather is facing federal indictment, Marcus. Your bank accounts are frozen. Zenith is trading at a penny. I do not catch falling knives." Richard walked away. Marcus tightened his grip on the glass. Arthur Sterling stepped up beside him. Arthur wore an old tuxedo. "Keep pushing, Marcus. We bought this VIP table for two hundred thousand dollars. We must secure a backer tonight. If Silas does not get his money, he will drag us back to the clinic." Chloe Sterling stood next to them. She wore a red silk dress. It looked expensive from a distance, but the fabric was a cheap rental. She constantly adjusted the hem to hide the frayed edges. "Everyone is staring at us, Daddy," Chloe whispered. She plastered a fake smile on her face. "They know we lost the Zenith money." "Smile wider," Arthur commanded. "Confidence is currency in this room. We still belong here." At the main entrance of the ballroom, the heavy brass doors opened. Julian stepped into the light. He wore the bespoke charcoal suit. It fit him flawlessly. The stark black silk eyepatch covered his right socket. It gave him an aura of absolute danger. He looked nothing like the subservient husband who had washed floors that morning. Two massive security guards in black suits stepped directly in front of him. "Halt," the first guard ordered. He put a hand on Julian’s chest. "This is a closed private event. Show me your VIP invitation." "I do not carry paper invitations," Julian stated calmly. His voice carried over the ambient noise. "Check your guest registry." The second guard smirked. He looked at Julian. He noticed the eyepatch and the scars barely visible at the edge of the silk. "We do not need to check the registry. We know exactly who you are. You are the Sterling family charity case. The organ donor." "Step aside," Julian commanded. He did not raise his voice. The authority in his tone was absolute. "You need to leave before we physically throw you out," the first guard warned. He reached for his radio. "The Mayor is hosting this event. We do not allow beggars near the buffet." Chloe heard the commotion. She turned her head. Her eyes widened. She saw Julian standing at the entrance. He looked powerful. He looked dangerous. The sight of him in a suit that cost more than her entire net worth ignited a blinding rage inside her. "Well look who crawled out of the gutter," Chloe announced loudly. Her voice cut through the ballroom. The wealthy guests stopped talking. They turned to watch. High society thrived on public humiliation. Chloe marched toward the entrance. Marcus and Arthur followed right behind her. Chloe crossed her arms. She looked Julian up and down with exaggerated disgust. "Did you really spend your last few dollars renting a suit just to sneak in here?" Chloe mocked. She projected her voice so the entire room could hear. "Are you that hungry? The public hospital food must be terrible." Julian looked at her. His left eye was completely cold. "You are wearing a rented dress, Chloe. The tag is still tucked inside your back zipper." A few socialites in the crowd laughed softly. Chloe flushed bright red. She reached behind her back frantically to tuck the tag away. Marcus stepped forward to shield her. He pointed a finger at Julian’s chest. "You have a lot of nerve showing your face here, mutt," Marcus sneered. "Did you come to beg for your job back? I heard about your little casino stunt this afternoon." "It was not a stunt," Julian replied smoothly. "It was a transfer of wealth." "It was a complete system glitch," Arthur interrupted. He laughed loudly for the crowd. "Two hundred million dollars? Please. The gaming commission probably froze that payout the second you walked out the door. The casino manager realized you rigged the machine. That is why you are here trying to crash a charity dinner. You are completely broke." The elite crowd murmured in agreement. The idea that a battered stray dog could hold two hundred million dollars was offensive to their worldview. A casino glitch made perfect sense to them. "You lost your eye to clear our debt," Chloe said. She regained her false confidence. "Then you gambled away whatever pity money you scrounged up. You are a pathetic loser, Julian. You will always be a loser. Security, get this trash out of our sight. He is ruining my appetite." "I am not leaving," Julian stated. "I have business on the main stage tonight." Marcus laughed in pure disbelief. "Business? On the main stage? Who are you going to pitch to? The catering staff? You do not even have a bank account." "Throw him out right now," Arthur ordered the guards. He waved his hand dismissively. "Toss him into the street. If he resists, break his legs. I will cover your legal fees." The two security guards stepped forward. They cracked their knuckles. They reached out to grab Julian by the shoulders. "Stop right there," a booming voice echoed from the back of the crowd. The wealthy elites parted immediately. They stepped aside to create a clear path. The Mayor of Crestwood City walked through the center of the ballroom. He wore a tuxedo adorned with a golden civic pin. The Mayor looked furious. "Mister Mayor, thank goodness," Arthur smiled warmly. He stepped toward the politician. "I apologize for the disturbance. My former son in law snuck in. We are having security remove him right now." The Mayor ignored Arthur completely. He walked straight past him. He stopped directly in front of Julian. The entire ballroom went completely silent. Chloe smirked. She waited for the Mayor to personally order Julian’s arrest. Marcus crossed his arms in triumph. The Mayor looked at Julian’s bespoke suit. He looked at the black silk eyepatch. His eyes widened in absolute shock. The color drained completely from his face. The Mayor raised his hand toward the security guards. "Take your hands off him this instant," the Mayor ordered. His voice shook with genuine terror. Arthur frowned in confusion. "Sir? What are you doing? He is a beggar." The Mayor turned to Arthur. The political titan looked completely panicked. "Shut your mouth, Arthur," the Mayor hissed violently. He turned back to Julian and bowed his head slightly.
