Nine Soon enough the four of us were headed out of town again. Nate was alone in his squad car ahead of us. Sandy, Lydia, and I were in Lydia’s car, with Sandy driving for some reason. She drove too fast again, but I didn’t get sick. Enough of that. I swallowed forcefully and looked out the window as we went through Carson. We stopped briefly at the new blockade the FBI had set up. Nate talked to someone who came up to his window. I saw him gesturing to us, saw the agent or whatever he was look back at us, and then we were headed down the road again, deeper into the forest. We passed by second growth forests, maybe third growth. I didn’t know. And then the road curved again and again, and I knew we were in mixed forest, mostly new growth with some of the old growth that hadn’t been burne
