The Final Gambit

1013 Words
The explosion’s roar still blared in Nathan’s ears as he raced down the twisting road away from the burning estate. He gripped the wheel tightly and felt his mind racing through the information he had just gleaned. Kane had bitten him inside a trap; Nathan had made it a haven. The files he'd retrieved from the hidden room were now spread out on the passenger seat. Among those was a map pinpointed with coordinates, an elaborate schematic of just how the Circle operated, and perhaps most critical of all a location:Budapest. Nathan did know Kane wouldn’t have left Emily and Ethan there unattended. It was the last level in the game and Nathan would see to it that it ended on his terms. It was an unendurable drive to Budapest, mile after mile breathing in the gravity of what was at stake. The files had exposed chilling details about the Circle’s operations: weapons trafficking, political manipulation and science-fiction-like experiments. But none of it was more important than the live feed of Emily and Ethan. Nathan had etched their terrified faces into his memory. They were alive. That was all he needed for motivation. He parked his stolen vehicle outside the city and made his way in on foot, taking back alleys and deserted buildings to evade detection. There would be eyes everywhere watching Kane. The coordinates took Nathan to a run-down train station on the outskirts of Budapest. It was a gutted old building, once a grand cathedral, now just a place for shadows and decay with its grand arches. Nathan used binolars to scout the area. Guarding each entry way, their movements quick and methodical. They weren’t amateurs. Kane had strengthened his position substantially. Nathan’s mind raced. A straight attack would be suicide. He had to cause a distraction. He made several passes around the perimeter, discovering an old fuel tanker parked close to the station. The corner of his lips began to curl. Nathan loaded explosives into the tanker and set a timer for three minutes. As he retreated toward the station, he stayed low, his silenced pistol ready. It was a deafening explosion that reverberated under his feet. The guards ran to the point of the explosion, leaving several entrances unguarded. Nathan slid inside, quick and quiet. The station’s interior was just as run down as its outside, with broken benches and shattered glass strewn across the floor. He went toward the central hall, where he saw a staircase going down to the lower levels. As Nathan descended into the station’s depths, his heart raced. The air became cold and the low whooping of machines reverberated through the hollows. He made his way down a narrow hallway to a steel door guarded by two men. Nathan didn’t hesitate. A quick double shot, and the guards were crumpling to the ground. He pushed through the door, his breath choking in his throat as he entered. In the middle of the room, in shackles, were Emily and Ethan. When they caught sight of him, their eyes widened in simultaneous hope and fear. “Dad!” Ethan cried out. Nathan ran to them with shaking hands and tried to free their bindings. “It’s okay,” he whispered. “I’m here. You’re safe now.” But before he could complete his thought, a slow clap rang from the doorway. “Well, isn’t this heartwarming,” Kane said, entering the room. The Showdown Nathan spun, putting himself between Kane and his family. His gun was already drawn, trained on Kane’s chest. “You’ve lost, Kane,” Nathan said coolly. “Let them go, and maybe I’ll spare you.” Kane smiled, infuriatingly unperturbed. “You don’t understand, yeah? Take a seat. This isn’t about me. It’s about what comes next.” He pointed to a monitor on the wall. The screen came on, showing a countdown timer: 10:00.. 9:59.. 9:58. “What’s that?” Nathan demanded. “A new world begins,” Kane said. “That prototype you blew up? It was just the first piece. This is where the real weapon is, in Budapest. When that timer goes to zero, it will have been felt in every major city in Europe.” Nathan’s blood ran cold. “You’re bluffing.” Kane shrugged. “Try me.” The Sacrifice Nathan did not have any second thoughts. He lunged at Kane, and their bodies slammed together, scrapping violently. As they rolled around, grappling, clouting each other with bone-crushing force, the gun fell out of Nathan’s grip. Emily and Ethan could only watch in horror, helpless. Kane was tough, but Nathan’s will gave him the advantage. He succeeded in pinning Kane down on the ground and then delivered a final, fatal punch that knocked him out. Nathan reached for his pistol and turned to the monitor. The timer was down to 3:45. “There has to be a way to stop it,” he said, looking around the room. His gaze focused on a control panel next to the monitor. He sprinted to it, fingers racing across the keyboard. Although the system was encrypted, Nathan had the skills he needed, honed over the years during his work for the CIA .The timer counted down: 2:30 2:29 … At last, he found the command to bypass it. He clicked it, holding his breath as the screen wavered. Override accepted. Countdown terminated. Nathan let out a breath, visibly relieved. Nathan released Emily and Ethan, gathering them into a tight hug. “I’m so sorry,” he whispered. “I could’ve been there for you.” Emily rubbed her eyes, tears flooding down her cheeks. “You came for us. That’s all that matters.” They walked out of the station, the cold night air stinging their skin. Sirens echoed in the distance the local authorities on their way. Nathan knew they would not be able to stay. Kane’s net may be busted, but leftovers of the Circle would still chase them. They disappeared into the night, and Nathan embraced his family, vowing to protect them at all costs.
