The Reckoning

423 Words
Prologue The flames rise high into the night, consuming the temple at the heart of the commune. Screams echo through the valley as the Children of the Eclipse scatter into the darkness. Ethan stands at the edge of the inferno, his mind racing. This was never the plan—but now, there is no turning back. Chapter 1: Ashes and Shadows As the temple burns, Amelia grips Ethan’s arm. “We have to go—now.” Sirens wail in the distance. Someone must have called the authorities. But will they arrive as rescuers—or as something worse? Ethan remembers the way Lucian spoke of his "friends in power." The fire may not be enough to end this nightmare. With Amelia and the other defectors, Ethan escapes into the forest. Their only hope lies in reaching the nearby town before Lucian's remaining followers regroup. Chapter 2: The Hunt Begins Dawn barely breaks before they hear the footsteps. The Children are searching for them. Shadows move between the trees, whispering chants of devotion. Lucian may have vanished, but his hold over them remains unbroken. Ethan and Amelia lead the group deeper into the woods, but the path is treacherous. One wrong step could mean capture—or worse. The cult does not tolerate betrayal. Chapter 3: Betrayal Among Us As exhaustion sets in, tensions rise. One of the defectors, a man named Carter, hesitates. “Maybe we should turn back. Maybe—maybe we were wrong about Lucian.” Before anyone can respond, he pulls a knife. He was never truly one of them—he was a spy, planted to ensure their loyalty. A struggle ensues. Amelia disarms him, but not before he shouts into the trees, alerting the pursuers. They have minutes, maybe seconds, before the hunt reaches them. Chapter 4: The Final Stand The group reaches an abandoned ranger station, a last refuge before the town. As they barricade themselves inside, the Children arrive. Their chants grow louder. They know Ethan and the others are inside. Ethan grips a broken radio, hoping the authorities are truly on their way. “Help is coming,” he tells Amelia. But is it? Or is this where their story ends? A sudden gunshot shatters the night. Then another. The chanting stops. Silence falls. Flashing lights appear in the distance. Someone has arrived. But are they friends—or something worse? Cliffhanger A familiar voice crackles over the ranger station’s radio. “You thought you could escape the Eclipse, Ethan?” Lucian is alive.
