Chapter Twelve – The Graveyard of Light

758 Words
Sector Nineteen. Arielle had heard the name whispered like a curse in old rebel files. A forbidden zone sealed off after the Glyph Core Collapse two decades ago — a disaster blamed on arcane failures. But Dax’s research told a different story: Sector Nineteen was where the glyphs were born. Now it was dead land — corrupted, humming with latent energy, overrun by wild glyph storms and decayed biotech. No one sane ventured in. But Arielle wasn’t looking for sanity. She was looking for her mother. The Descent The team moved under cover of night. Arielle, Kieran, Dax, and a newly joined rogue ex-Order enforcer named Selene Vale—a sharp-eyed woman with scars like lightning bolts and a code of silence that spoke volumes. Arielle didn’t trust her yet. But they needed her. Selene knew the layout of the buried sector tunnels better than anyone. They entered through a collapsed mag-rail tunnel, the walls lined with fractured glyph stones, their surfaces faintly pulsing like breathing skin. Kieran glanced around warily. “This place is wrong.” “Not wrong,” Selene muttered. “Awake.” Memories in the Dust As they descended, Arielle’s glyphs began to shimmer uncontrollably. She touched the nearest glyph-slab—and a memory bled into her mind. She saw her mother, Elara, younger. Smiling. Holding baby Arielle inside a tank of glowing light. “She must never know the price of her life,” Elara had said. Then came the screams. Alarms. Betrayal. Arielle pulled back, gasping. “I was made here.” Selene nodded. “Sector Nineteen wasn’t just a lab. It was your cradle.” The Chamber of Echoes They reached the old control core. The doors parted with a sigh of dust and static. And there—standing beneath a fractured Codex reactor—was Elara Ravyn. Older. Thinner. Her once-brilliant eyes dimmed by exposure and pain. “Mom…” Elara turned. Her lips trembled. “You came.” Arielle ran to her, tears brimming. They embraced, the air thick with unspoken words. But something was off. Elara’s glyphs were unstable, pulsing like broken code. “I was caught when I tried to destroy Lucan’s first Codex prototype,” Elara explained. “They used me to test containment on glyph-human convergence.” Kieran frowned. “You’ve been altered.” Elara looked at him. “We all are now.” Suddenly— The alarms screamed. Codex-born Strike The walls exploded inward. Codex-born soldiers surged through—eyes glowing, limbs bending unnaturally. At their head was one unlike the others: A woman with violet glyphs carved into her skin, radiating raw Codex energy. “Arielle Ravyn,” she hissed. “Your awakening is incomplete. Let me finish it.” Arielle’s glyphs flared as she faced her. Kieran lunged, blade meeting blade—but the woman moved faster than anything he’d fought. Selene fought two at once, moving like shadow. Dax activated pulse traps, delaying them. But they were being overwhelmed. Arielle locked eyes with the glyph-born woman. “What are you?” “I was your twin,” she whispered. “Before I was perfected.” Arielle froze. “You died.” “I lived.” The Shattered Bond Elara stepped between them. “No! I buried her! She was unstable—” “She was alive!” the woman screamed. Lightning shot from her hand, blasting Elara across the room. Arielle screamed, catching her mother’s body. Elara bled from the chest. “I tried to protect you,” she whispered. “But maybe I chose the wrong daughter…” Her hand went limp. And her glyphs faded. The Collapse Rage erupted in Arielle like a sunburst. Her glyphs expanded across her skin, forming wings of light and ash. The Codex-born twin snarled and charged— But Arielle met her blow for blow, each strike cracking the walls with energy. Dax activated a seismic charge. “We have to go! The whole sector will cave!” Kieran pulled Arielle away as the twin vanished into the shadows, promising, “We’ll meet again, sister.” They fled as Sector Nineteen collapsed behind them—dust, rubble, and secrets lost once more to the deep. Aftermath Later, in the ruins of a safehouse outside the blast zone, Arielle sat beside her mother’s wrapped body. She was silent. Selene finally spoke. “The Order made monsters out of angels.” Kieran knelt. “What happens now?” Arielle looked up. Her voice was cold and fierce. “We burn their empire. From the ashes.”
