Chapter Seventeen – The Echo Left Behind

606 Words
The ruins of the First Spire smoked under a blood-orange sky. All around the shattered remnants of the convergence chamber, magic hung in the air like the aftertaste of a scream. The world had survived—barely. But the price had been immense. And for Arielle, it was unbearable. The Aftermath She stood alone in the fractured remains of the chamber, ash clinging to her skin, the Codex crystal—now inert—resting at her feet. The spot where Kieran had vanished was still warm, glowing faintly, like an ember refusing to die. Her fingers trembled as she reached toward it. Selene’s voice echoed from behind. “We need to go. The Order’s survivors are regrouping. We won’t get another chance to vanish.” Arielle didn’t turn. “He’s gone.” Selene limped forward, her armor scorched, her eyes red with blood and tears. “He saved us all. That has to mean something.” “It’s not enough.” There was no anger in her voice. Just emptiness. Just the hollow that came after losing the only person who truly saw her. A Message in the Static That night, they sheltered in the ruins of a pre-Code substation miles outside the city. The stars were sharper than they had ever been—like even the sky was trying to start over. Arielle sat alone, turning Kieran’s old datapad over in her hands. The screen was cracked. It flickered every few seconds, but didn’t respond to any inputs. Until it did. A single glyph bloomed across the screen—Kieran’s. And then his voice, fragmented, barely holding form. “If you’re seeing this… then I’m gone. Or something close. Arielle, don’t cry for me. I was built to end things. But you… you’re built to begin them. Keep going. The Codex isn’t finished. There’s still one key left.” The recording crackled. Symbols rotated in the background, ones she didn’t recognize. “There’s a place in Evermoor—The Hollow Archive. My blood triggered the convergence. Yours might open the next gate.” Arielle’s breath caught in her throat. Kieran hadn’t died. Not entirely. He’d left a path. Selene’s Wound Selene sat with her blade across her lap, watching the fire burn low. She hadn’t spoken of the battle with Lucan. Arielle joined her quietly. “You were hurt.” Selene nodded. “He stabbed me. Not with a weapon. With a glyph—designed to erase memories.” Arielle’s eyes widened. “I fought it,” Selene said. “But I’m losing fragments. Every hour. I don’t know how much longer I’ll remember who I am.” “I’m so sorry,” Arielle whispered. Selene looked at her with an almost wistful sadness. “If I forget… promise me you’ll remind me I fought for something real.” “I will,” Arielle said, voice cracking. “I swear it.” The Boy in the Woods Three days later, as they crossed the edge of Evermoor’s dead zone, Arielle saw him. A boy—no older than thirteen—standing in the ruins of a forgotten town. He wore tattered robes, but his eyes shimmered gold. And on his hand, burned into the skin, was Kieran’s glyph. He looked at her and spoke in a voice far too calm. “You’re the one who survived him.” Arielle froze. “Who are you?” “I don’t know. I just woke up here. But I remember your face. And… I remember what he felt for you.” Her heart stopped. Kieran hadn’t just left her a message. He’d left behind a fragment of himself.
