Jameson POV
After lunch, Dave walked with us back to the house. Part of our conversation kept replaying in my mind, and I was curious about something.
“What are some of the other differences?” I asked Dave. “Between Lycans and werewolves, I mean.”
He thought for a minute. “Well, like Alpha Terrance mentioned, a Lycan is a lot stronger than a werewolf. Another difference is that Lycans walk around on two feet, while our wolves are four footed. Another is that our mates tend to be other werewolves, although that’s not always the case. Most of the time, Lycans’ mates are human, but turn into Lycans once they meet and accept the mate bond. There’s probably other things, but I can’t think of them at the moment.”
“Interesting,” Jonathan commented. “So our mate is probably some unsuspecting human female who’s going to freak out when she finds out supernatural beings exist, she’s eternally bound to not one but two of them, AND she’s going to become one herself. Talk about needing therapy.”
Dave and I both laughed. But as funny as it sounded, he was actually right. The poor girl had a shock coming to her, whoever and wherever she was.
“Well, as you know, there are actually a few humans out there that know we exist,” Dave replied. “Hopefully she’s one of them.”
“And we won’t be able to shift until we find her?” I asked.
“Well, that’s what you guys tell me your Lycans said,” he replied. “They’d know better than me.”
‘That’s right,’ Donovan confirmed in my mind. ‘We have to meet her and be around her for three days. And hopefully that’s soon, because I’m itching to run in my true form.’
‘I know you are, buddy,’ I told him. ‘And honestly, I’m getting anxious to see what you look like.’
“I hope she is one of the ones who know about Lycans and werewolves,” Jonathan commented. “I mean, it’s going to be hard to convince her if we can’t shift and prove it to her. She’s going to think we’re riding the crazy train and run as fast and far as she in the opposite direction.
Dave laughed. “True. But my bet would be that the Moon Goddess took that into consideration when she picked your mate for you.”
“And we’ll have to share a mate?” I asked.
He nodded. “Most of the time, identical twins/triplets/etc do have to share mates. The only exceptions I’ve seen is a couple of cases where identical twins were mated to identical twins. Even then, the twins both felt the mate pull to both of the other twins. In one case that I know of, they have a polyamorous relationship of sorts – that is, basically they swap partners on occasion. In the other case, they choose not to swap partners, at least as far as I know.”
I was intrigued, and I could tell Jonathan was too. “Wow!” I replied. “I could barely keep up with one girlfriend when I had one. Keeping up with two or more would have to be exhausting.”
Dave laughed again. “Very true! I don’t know how they do it. Linda is more than enough for me.”
By then, we’d reached the house and were walking inside. Linda was in the kitchen, pouring herself a cup of coffee. She turned to us with a smile.
“Linda is what?” she asked.
Dave explained to her what we’d been discussing, and she laughed. “I have to agree,” she told us. “That goes both ways too. I have no idea how these she-wolves keep up with more than one man.”
We all laughed at that. We continued chatting for a few more minutes, with Linda filling us in on how the grieving families were holding up. After a little while, Jonathan and I excused ourselves to the room we were currently staying in. We hadn’t called Mom and Dad in a few days, and we had decided earlier that day that it was past time to call and update them on what we’d found so far.
We used my cell phone to call Mom’s cell phone, and she put it on speaker so they could both talk to us. We told them about finding the picture of us just before the kidnapping, and Jonathan used his phone to send them a picture of the picture.
They were quiet for a minute while they studied the picture, then Mom spoke. “Wow,” she said quietly. “That’s exactly how I remember the two of you looking when we first adopted you. Wait just a minute. I have a picture of the two of you that’s almost identical.” We heard her rustling around. “Hold on, it’s in one of these photo albums. I’m pretty sure it’s - ah, there it is. Tanner, would you mind taking a picture of this and sending it to the boys?”
“Sure,” Dad replied. A few seconds later, we heard the click of his phone camera.
“It’s on the way,” Mom told us.
A few seconds later, Jonathan’s phone dinged, indicating a message, and he opened it, then showed me the picture. He held the picture from the article up next to the phone. There was zero doubt that the two boys in both pictures were the same two boys. We were even standing almost exactly the same in both of them.
“Wow,” I said quietly. “Well, I guess that erases any doubts I had.”
“Me too,” Jonathan agreed.
“Oh my,” Mom whispered, as though the reality had just hit her. “My babies are royalty. I mean, we always called you our little princes, but we just didn’t know how right we were.”
“So what’s your plan now?” Dad asked us.
“We’re going to talk to Alpha Terrance’s dad, Anthony this evening,” Jonathan told him. “We’re hoping he can give us some insight on how to reach the king and queen, or at least tell us where the kingdom is located. We think it’s in or near a town called Ogunquit, Maine, but we’re waiting to see if Anthony can confirm that.”
“I’ve been out that way a time or two,” Dad told us. “Pretty country out there. It makes sense that the kingdom could possibly be there. There’s plenty of secluded areas around there, or at least there used to be. It’s been years since I’ve been there.”
We chatted with Mom and Dad for a few more minutes before saying our goodbyes and hanging up. The next person we called was Sarah. We had been hoping that Nate would be with her, but he wasn’t. We caught her up on everything that was going on, and she told us about a few things that had been going on at her school. She didn’t have a lot of time to talk, since she was studying for a test, but she made us promise to call as soon as we had any sort of updates.
After hanging up with her, I kicked back on the bed, watching YouTube videos. Jonathan, feeling restless, decided to go out for a walk and explore the territory a little more. He’d probably been gone an hour with I suddenly felt Donovan stirring in my mind.
‘What’s up?’ I asked him.
‘We need to find Jonathan,’ he told me urgently. ‘Something’s wrong?’
I was still new to this whole mind linking thing, so I asked him if he could help me mind link him, and he told me he could.
‘Jonathan?’ I called out through the link. ‘You ok?’
‘No! I was just trying to text you but I don’t have signal,’ he replied, sounding frantic. ‘There’s a big group of wolves out here that I don’t think are supposed to be here. I’m up in a tree and they haven’t found me yet, but man, I’m not sure if I can take them on alone!’
‘Where are you?’ I asked.
Before he could reply, Donovan spoke up. ‘I can find him. Because of the twin thing, I can almost always pinpoint exactly where he is.’
‘Never mind,’ I told Jonathan. ‘Donovan says he can find you.’
As I was “talking,” I was jumping up out of the bed and throwing my shoes on.
‘Good, because I’m not sure I could’ve told you how to find me,’ he replied tensely. ‘Please, bro, hurry!’
‘I’m on my way,’ I told him. I dashed out the bedroom door and saw Dave and Linda sitting in the living room talking. “Jonathan’s in trouble!” I told them.
Both of them jumped up.
“What do you mean, he’s in trouble?” Dave demanded.
I very quickly told them what he’d said, and Dave uttered a curse. “Sounds like rogues got onto the territory,” he said quickly. “And you say you can find him?”
“Donovan can,” I replied.
“Let’s go!” he told me.
All three of us ran out the door, with the two of them shifting into their wolves the second we were outside.
‘I’m going to take control,’ Donovan told me, then immediately did so. We took off running in the direction opposite the packhouse, with Dave and Linda in their wolf forms hot on our heels.
We were only about a half mile away from the house when all three of us detected the scent. I don’t really know how to describe it, except that it kinda smelled like a wet dog standing beside a person who hadn’t showered in a couple weeks.
‘Rogues,’ Dave hissed through a mind link. Immediately, I felt a new mind link open, and realized very quickly that Dave was linking Alpha Terrance and had pulled me in. ‘Alpha, we have rogues about halfway between my house and the guard booth,’ he told him. ‘From the scent, I’m going to guess around forty to fifty of them. I don’t have a visual on them yet.’
‘S**t,’ Alpha Terrance replied. ‘Just what we needed. How many of you do you have there?’
‘Just Linda, the twins, and me,’ he told him. ‘Jonathan is hidden in a tree somewhere here. He was out for a walk when he came across them. Don’t know if they’ve seen him yet.’
‘I’m on my way, and I’ll link some warriors to meet us there,’ Alpha Terrance replied.
Right about then, we topped a hill and saw them. We came to a stop and ducked behind some trees, as it didn’t appear they’d seen us yet. And we were downwind, so they hadn’t caught our scents either. Dave was right, there was around fifty of them. Now the next question was, where was my brother?
I had no sooner thought that question than I hear a, “Psst,” above me. I looked up to see Jonathan several feet up in the tree, sitting on a thick branch.
Donovan pulled us up so that we were sitting next to him. ‘Alpha Terrance is on his way with warriors,’ he told him. ‘I would suggest you let Damien take control. He knows what to do.’
Jonathan nodded, and I could see the change in his eyes as he did just that. Even in the situation we found ourselves in, it still struck me as surreal that there were actually two sets of twins in this tree – Jonathan and me, and Damien and Donovan.
Donovan turned our head to look and I saw Dave and Linda, still in wolf form, just a few feet away.
‘Stay where you are until Alpha Terrance and the warriors get here,’ Dave instructed us. ‘Sorry, I know you both technically outrank me, but I have a little more experience in this.’
We both nodded to him. I had no problem letting him take the lead for now, and I know Jonathan didn’t either.
In what seemed like the blink of an eye, we heard the thunderous sound of multiple paws hitting the ground, and we saw the rogues all spin and look at the same time. Behind us, Alpha Terrance’s black wolf, Diesel burst out of the trees, followed by about 75 warriors in their wolf forms. I heard the challenging howls and growls from the rogues as they took a defensive stance. Those sounds were echoed by the warriors as they ran. Dave and Linda both joined the warriors, and Jonathan and I slid out of the tree to do the same. I had a feeling this was about to get really ugly, really fast.
