Sofia.
“How is he?” I asked as I burst into my father's office. I realized my mistake a second too late as six pairs of eyes focused on me. My father was in an official meeting with his better and four of the pack elders.
I composed myself and walked in, shutting the door behind me. I was feeling self conscious about my sweaty clothes as I made my way inside. Unable to focus on the training after I left my father, I immediately ended the session ten minutes early and ran all the way to my father's office.
Regretting my poor choice of timing, I held my head down as I sat in my assigned chair on my father's right hand and tried my best to look professional as Beta Darren scowled at me from across the table.
“Nice of you to join us, Sofia.” My father acknowledged, eyeing my state before returning to his discussion and I blushed. I was never this rattled but I haven't been able to stay still since I laid my eyes on the rogue this morning.
I was itching to ask what had been done to him but I forced myself to remain quiet and glean information from the meeting.
“I don't believe him,” Darren stated with a glare on his face. I held the urge to roll my eyes. I bet he has been in a foul mood all day just because things didn't go his own way.
“Well, I do.” My father retorted. “I have personally investigated his story and it checks out.”
I was curious about the story but I filed it in my mind to ask my father later.
“But what if he was part of the rogues that attacked the village and they turned on him after that? What if he lied to us just to save his own skin? We don't need further complications at this point, Alpha. We should have just killed him in the woods like I suggested,” Darren replied with a frown on his face.
The fact that he was adamant about killing the rogue made a feeling of protectiveness envelop me. “Stop throwing tantrums because we didn't go with your idea, Darren. You are meant to follow the Alpha’s orders, not question his authority. Don't you dare forget your place.”
He looked scornfully at me from across the table. “And who gave you the right to talk–”
I growled at him and he clenched his fists as the authority in my voice made him bow. I didn't release him until I was sure he had learnt his lesson.
I finally leaned back in my chair and that was when I remembered that we weren't the only ones in the room. My gaze darted over to my father and he nodded approvingly, a small smirk on his face. That took off some of the tension in my body as I visibly relaxed.
“Darren, Sofia is my daughter and your future Alpha, so you will accord her the same respect you give to me.” I glared at Darren grudgingly accepted.
“Anyway, this meeting is over. We have established that Carter will stay with us for the meantime while we observe his behavior.” The name played in my mind and I smiled.
They all grunted in approval as they got up to leave, but Darren remained behind. “Darren, I'll call for you soon. I need to talk to my daughter alone,” my father told him pointedly and he bowed as he left.
Immediately the door closed behind me, I gushed out. “Where is he now, father? And how did he get to our land? Is he safe? I don't trust Darren.”
My father chuckled as he explained everything Carter told him. I nodded along to his words as I assimilated his answers.
“Can I see him?” I asked after my curiosity was satisfied.
Immediately I got my father's approval, I made my way out of the office but his voice stopped me when I got to the door. “I just want to tell you I’m proud of you. The way you handled the situation earlier and the way you put Darren in his place. I'm sure your mother is also proud of you, goddess bless her soul. You'll make a great ruler someday, Sofia.”
Emotions clogged my throat and I made my way back to him as tears welled up in my eyes. “Thank you Father.” I said as I hugged him tight.
I made my way to my room to freshen up before visiting Carter. “Carter…” I breathed out, loving the way it rolled off my tongue.
“Did I wake you up?” I asked as I stepped into the room. My wolf was prancing in my brain as I drew closer to him.
“Mine…” she howled when I inhaled his delicious scent. He smelled like the pines and earth.
But I didn't like the wary look in his eyes as I drew closer. “My name is Sofia. I brought you dinner,” I gently spoke in an attempt to alleviate his fears.
He looked suspiciously from me to the basket in my hand. “Are you sure it's not poisoned?” He asked coldly.
I scoffed as my wolf whined in my head, not liking the way our mate suspected us. Just as I was about to give him a snarky response, Keith reached out to me through the mind link.
“Sofia, terrible things are happening. Nate has just been found dead by the border alongside two other warriors under us, all of them are sixteen years old.”
I froze as my blood chilled. Dropping the basket in haste, I got out of the palace and shifted into my wolf.
Tears blurred my vision as I howled into the sky, hearing echoing howls. My father was already there and I shifted back to my human form.
“I told you letting that rouge live was a terrible idea but no one seemed to listen to me,” Darren said from beside me father and I glared at him suspiciously. I wouldn't put it past him to kill them and try to pin it on my mate's head.
“And where have you been all day, Beta Darren?” I asked, venom seeping into my voice.
“He was with me all day, Sofia.” My father defended before giving instructions to gather the bodies back to the pack house for a proper burial.
“Wait…” I told the warriors, tears running down my face as I knelt down to close their eyes that were wide with terror even in death.
I'll avenge everyone of you, I promise.
