I picked up Leo and Snow and hurried back to the bedroom. Dave was here, and I was terrified, but I wasn’t going to let Emily see me like that.
She had tried to break my spirit once, and the last thing I wanted to do was give her the satisfaction of seeing me broken. I shut the door and heaved a sigh before putting them on the bed.
Their anxious little faces wore slight frowns as they watched me pace around the room.
“Mommy, are the bad men here? Will they take us?”
Snow’s voice made me slow to a halt and turn to them. Tears formed at the corners of her eyes, and my heart broke at the sight.
“No one is taking you away from me,” I said and walked towards them.
I knelt and held their hands. “I know you’re scared, but we’ll be fine. We just need to leave here.”
