“Under arrest for tax evasion? And embezzlement?!”
The words were taken straight from George’s throat, said by the mouth of a total stranger sharing the same sense of disbelief with him.
All around, glances of confusion and disbelief were exchanged and hushed whispers echoed in the hall.
George was no different from them. He squinted at the officers, expression a mixture of confusion and disbelief.
“What… are you talking about?” he demanded.
One of the officers didn’t bother answering verbally. He pulled out a document and shoved it toward George’s face.
On the crisp white paper, rows of numbers, company accounts, shell transfers and timelines all stared back at him in newly printed, black inks.
