To fight or to hide

It was never my plan to hide away in a pack as the Community seized control of the capital. That brought me to a disadvantage that I would rather do without but a few years have already passed and the witches still walked the earth. Those pale faced monstrosities found it amusing to mess about my territory, throwing cursing at will in hopes of luring me and my brother out. My dear brother, Jason, had suggested we go up there and return to the earth what belonged to the earth. In simpler terms kill the witches and burn their remains to stop any resurrection spells taking place but I had a better idea. "...And you're certain this will work?" he asked after I disclosed my plan to him. I could see he wasn't to keen a following what he labelled 'my rougish plans' 'suicide mission' or more straightforwardly 'death sentence.' "Not at all, brother but we'll never know until we try." "My plan was..." "Your plan would have us killed before you could even say the word kill." "How are you so certain?" he asked. I could tell his patients was already wearing thin but I had enough for the both of us. "Storming into a city crawling with witches in hopes of killing them. Even if we used stealth their whispering-dead would warn them before we arrive." He pondered for a long moment before he said "I have a friend who will be willing to cloak us." "A friend you say? What makes you think that she won't betray us for her own cause?" "A bit of motivation never hurt." he said chugging yet another glass of scotch. "Fine, get your witch but if your plan backfires you owe me more than an apology." I stated. I was not about to lead a pack full of Lycans into a death trap. Our current situation was rather special. There was a bounty on our heads from god-knows-where and the witches were getting bolder by the day. Which was no good new for us. Although I'd have preferred to s*******r some witches we had to figure out the source of their confidence boost. This was like history repeating itself all over again but with us at a disadvantage. I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket and I stormed out of the office before pulling it out. It was not who I was expecting so I didn't bother answering and instead dailed my good friend/errand boy, Colton. "Alpha." "You better have good news for me." I said as soon as he answered. "Seeing as you're the one who called I figured you'd have news for me." I remained silent and he continued "I guess not. I have located your guy but we might have a problem." "Then deal with it." " No this is not what I signed up for and don't you want to know what the problem is?" "No, I just want him vulnerable and ready to do my bidding." I hung up before he could protest. "Consider my method before you send us all on a suicide mission." I said to Jason. He stood motionless by a floor to ceiling window that overlooked a forest. "You know, I've thought long and hard about your plan. Everything about it is well revised but you didn't consider one thing." he said. I didn't have to ask before he added "The only vampire immune to magic is the king himself and you and I both know he hates our guts." "You said it yourself, a bit of motivation never hurt." He turned to me with a small smile which could have been mistaken for anything but the malice it held. "Your plan it is then. Walk me through it again would you?" I beamed at him but felt that it was too easy. Jason has never been one to change his mind muchless in such a short amount of time. Something was off and I was going to find out what. I explained the plan to him again, deliberately leaving out the part were I already had someone search for the vampire. He deployed same of the best tracks to find him. "So, what now?" he asked. "Simple, now we wait." "Have you ever known me to be a patient man?" "No but I've known you to be rationally." I said before leaving the office. I went to the spurring grounds were I watched men teach their sons to be warriors like themselves. It reminded me of the time father would spend teaching Jason and I to fight and to conquer. He did his part well but somewhere in the depths of my soul I knew I must have failed him. "Never put yourself in a position were you'll be the prey, the hunted. You are the beast and even in your darkest days it must remain as such." he said once yet here we are hiding away from our enemies. I had never thought I'd see the day. The fear my name Instilled in people, be it human or supernatural seemed like a joke now but I planned to fix it, and soon. Colton had always been efficient and this time was no different. I received Colton's call came in that night but with the good news came even worse news. "What do you mean he has friends? My sources said he's preferred working alone." "They were wrong." he spoke in a hushed voice. He sounded genuinely frightened and I dreaded what was to come. I had never had the honours if hearing his usually confident voice tremble but what ever was going on must have had his whole body convulsing. "Okay, I'll be there in a short while." I hung up before storming back to the pack house. I had to inform my brother before I left otherwise he'd have the city burnt doen in search of me. "Jason!" I called. It was a little after midnight and the halls were empty creating a resounding echo around me. "You do know everyone in this house has sensative ears, right?" he grumbled hopping down the stairs three at a time. "Something has come up, I'll be back before dawn. " I said waving my car keys in his face. "I'll come with you." "No need. I can handle myself." I said and walked out before he could say anymore. I received a call from Colton not long after I crossed the pack boundaries. He strongly recommended I keep my weapons on me and ditch the car, apparently this specific group of ancient vampires were well-versed with technology. We were in the twenty-first century, I'd be disappointed if they weren't. Because we were on human terf, I couldn't shift as per law which meant I had to take the faster way there. I arrived at a bar in the city in a record of ten minutes. Smooth jazz buzzed from the speakers and teenagers swayed to the music with emotionless faces. Poor kids, they must have planned on having the ultimate club night only to have it crushed by forces they could not understand. It didn't take a genius to know that it was a vampire's doing. "Alpha Blake?" The bartender asked. She looked lifeless like her movements were not her on. I nodded and let her lead me to the back room. Before I entered an enticing scent tickled my nose. I couldn't help but take in a greedy amount of it. My beast stirred from it's rest and even the delicious scent could not stop my mind from coming up with a few grotesque scenarios of what might be awaiting me. With my heart in my throat I pushed the door open, praying that Colton and his friends would forgive me for whatever must have happened to them. It looked more like a VIP lounge than the dark alley I had expected. Two man sat on a sofa facing me. Each had a glass of whiskey in hand and a serious look on their face but as soon as they turned to me their faves lit up as if meeting an old friend after many years. The world seemed to blur as my eyes met a pair of sparkling hazel ones. A hand must have punched through the wall of my chest and ripped my heart out because it certainly felt like so. My whole world came crushing down on me as whisper came from the depths of my soul with news I wished would be nothing but false. 'Mate'
