ANNABEL'S POV The sound of closing doors echoed in a dark room, accompanied by heavy footsteps. The room was dark and almost barely lit but the soft whisper of the wind from the window wasn't absent in the room. “How did the plan go?” “It is in motion, boss. But there is an unaccounted individual.” The one who had just walked in explained. “Pinky might recover from her illness. They now have Doctor Sinclair in their possession.” “What? I thought you planned for this?” “I'm sorry–” “If the girl becomes well again, we won't have a way of crushing Raffaele. Make sure you get rid of that doctor before the girl recovers at all.” “Your wish is my command, boss.” ________ Back in the mansion, Pinky was being lifted into the plane by some of the men as carefully as possible. The last thing I was expecting from a Don with a reputation such as Raffaele's was for his fort to be attacked. Or was this just a temporary place to avoid me knowing where their real place was, that's why it was this weakly fortified? “Get in.” Luca said to me as I was lost in thoughts, turning back to look at the house behind us. I didn't know why I wasn't really bothered, maybe the daring surgeries I always performed had messed with my nervous system. I nodded, heading up the stairs leading into the plane but before I could get in, a sharp pain shot through my arm, accompanied by the sound of gunshots. I felt someone shove me into the plane with force, the acting making me fall face first to the floor but that was the least of my worries as my clothes were getting soaked by my blood already and my arm was throbbing with a head splitting pain. “f**k…” I screamed in pain, grabbing my arm with a wince. I didn't know what to do. It was like my expertise flew out the window in a second. My head was blank and all I could register was the pain in my arm. I didn't register or order for this damned kind of situation and I was being served coldly. The sounds of gunshots didn't cease but it was soon covered by the noise from the plane and in a few seconds, we were up in the sky already. “Dottoressa Sinclair, are you fine?” Luca said, rushing over to me. He crouched before me, quickly grabbing my arm to tend to it. As someone used to being shot, he was quick and swift which was what I needed since I hadn't accessed the medical aspect of what was going on with me. “Damn it. I didn't sign up for this shit.” I screamed at him, ready to hit him any second but he wasn't the one who controlled my being here. It was Raffaele. And if I saw him right now, I knew I would strangle him to death in an instance. “Doctor,” one of the maids called them. “She's being unstable again. Could it be the stress?” “I'm dying here. If I die, who will take care of her? Damn it.” I screamed, snatching my arm from Luca with a slight groan. He wasn't done and I was feeling dizzy but I knew I would die either ways if I didn't tend to Pinky. What a wonderful life I found myself in. Heading towards Pinky's room, I stabbed her with some injections before giving orders to the maids to do the same thing I had done for Pinky earlier that day. Her condition was unusual but it wasn't something I couldn't help her with. I didn't spend all the time since I would read and study for nothing. Unlike other kids whose dreams died as they grew up, I had always aimed to be a surgeon since I was a kid. And I studied everyday to make sure I got there. That was why till now, I hadn't lost a single patient and I hadn't thought that in our kind of world where there were dangerous people, they also needed to be saved and given my reputation, I would be sought after. Therefore, meaning I would be entangled in their world also. After what felt like hours, they soon landed and after settling in, I headed back to check Pinky just to come across Raffaele who was talking to Luca in the main living room. I walked over to him in quick strides, my anger flaring as I cut him off. “Listen, Don.” I called him out, making him turn his attention from Luca to me. “Whatever this play is. I do not want to be involved in it. I almost lost my life and if this is what I signed up for, I'm sorry but I'm out.” “It was just a bait that happened too quickly. You weren't meant to be caught in the crossfire–” “Oh hello in case you missed the highlight, I was shot and I am in freaking pain because I decided not to bolt the instant I was alone last night. Or I didn't message anyone for help and go against you like you ordered against. My patient was endangered and you're telling me it was just a crossfire?” I spat angrily, glaring at him. “I haven't saved her life so she would be involved in some crossfire, young man. If anything had gone wrong with her, I wouldn't forgive you for wasting my hard work.” I warned sternly, staring into his eyes without flinching. My arm was throbbing and I felt dizzy but I didn't retract my gaze. I didn't know what he was going to do but I couldn't just sit there, with the possibility of continuously being involved in a so-called crossfire, and I wouldn't say a word about it. Before he could say a word, the maid in charge of watching Pinky rushed down to them, panting heavily. “She's awake.” “The young mistress is awake.”
