Chapter 2

CHAPTER 2 Taylor drove through the bustling city streets with a shaky focus. Images and words from her recent encounter haunted her like a litany. Her eyes were reddish and swollen, and what remained of her vibrant appearance was nothing short of her misery. She arrived home; a space suddenly so unfitting. None of the house staff were around, so she had the whole seclusion to further the wrecking of her mental state. She managed to close the door before her figure slipped against the furniture as she sprawled flat on the floor. “Why…?” Tears bawled down her eyes in response to herself. If she was told this would happen to her, she never would’ve believed it and might’ve even fought whoever had the idea. “It hurts, right?” A fresh voice sharpened at the far end of the room. Taylor snapped her eyes open to see a male figure clad in a dress, quite gloomy. A zipped-up hoodie jacket, black jean pants, and a mask on to keep his identity vague. Dangerous thoughts crept instantly into Taylor’s mind. “How about I help you put an end to it?” he muttered, simultaneously retrieving the pistol equipped with a suppressor he had with him. Taylor sprang up from the floor, frightened as the stranger began closing distance. Her instincts were on high alert as she whirled around the exit to dash out for her safety. She had barely opened up the door when her motion plummeted all of a sudden; she looked down, and blood gushed out of the spot a shot had impaired on her left leg. “Please!” Taylor’s voice cracked as a different kind of pain seared through her system, fresh and convulsive. “Spare me!” She pleaded amidst tears as she turned back around to face him. The stranger finally got to Taylor’s wrecked figure against the door, inhaling the smoke left in the wake of his g*n. “Your pretty face is telling me to do that, but the price paid for your life is much more pleasing,” he countered in a sinister tone, aiming the g*n straight at Taylor’s stomach. “I’m begging you. Let me live- “She hadn’t finished that statement when a bullet discharged. The air stilled, and the earth around Taylor went silent when she felt the shot tear into her skin without patience. “No!” She gasped in a low voice, sinking to her knees as she grabbed her stomach to manage the blood seeping out. “My baby…” “Your husband wanted me to let you know that he’s incredibly sorry,” the voice of the stranger remarked, then released a final shot into Taylor’s shoulder that sent her body crashing down fully onto the ground. Blood spilled out in streams, and Taylor’s heavy breaths weakened after each draw. Her eyes tightly closed in anticipation of her last breath. The Stranger brought out his phone and took a picture of what was left of Taylor’s state to document the success of his mission. He walked away afterwards, placing a call to reach his boss. “It’s done. You can come get rid of the body,” he said and hung up. Matthew Rhodes pulled the phone down and away from his ear with a large grin pasted on his face. He received a ping; he opened it up to check, and it was the pictorial evidence of a completed mission. “What is it? What got you smiling this big when you should be worried?” Shawna queried from where she was seated. “It’s ours. Everything we’ve ever wanted is ours now, baby. All of it!” He beamed with excitement as he approached her on the seat. “Are you serious? She’s been—?” She gestured at the word murder rather than say it. Matthew nodded, visibly elated as he lowered a palm on the left side of her cheek. “Check for yourself.” He showed her the picture he received. The same cheerfulness bubbling inside of Matthew rushed into Shawna’s features as she broke out a broad smile. “She’s gone! We did it. Everything is ours now!” Her gaze rolled around unbelievably, grinning from ear to ear. Matthew’s hand slipped away from her face as he stepped a few feet away from her. “I need to send someone to get rid of the body. We need to move on with the final phase of this plan as soon as possible,” he told her as he began scrolling through his contacts. “Hello,” he spoke into the phone once his call was answered. “Send in your team to go get rid of a body and do some cleanup at an address I’ll send to you through text after this phone call.” “Understood,” a sharp voice responded, and the call ended. Matthew glanced at Shawna before he asked, “You’re really certain she doesn’t have any family or relatives in the picture, right?” “You dated her for five years.” Shawna glared playfully at him. “And you were her best friend for longer,” he retorted and rolled his eyes. “I just don’t want anybody suddenly showing up to make a fuss about her disappearance once it’s been finalized. The story is that she went away and never came back, right after she named me the CEO of her tech company,” he said, cracking a devious smirk. “Probably many months later, after I’ve searched and waited long enough for her, I found solace within the arms of her secretary and best friend. That wouldn’t be much of a scandal now, would it? We could even spin it that she stole me from you first if the public chose not to warm up. What do you think?” “I think we need to go for a proper celebration over this. We won,” Shawna stated in a glorified tone. “And you don’t even need to worry about a future fuss because she has nobody except for the both of us. No cousin or any distant relative; no one at all.” Matthew blew out a satisfied sigh. “Cheers to our victory and—" The ringing of his phone disrupted the speech he was about to give as he signalled an excuse to answer the call. “Hello?” “We couldn’t find a body, sir. There’s a murder scene, but there’s no dead body,” a voice narrated on the phone.
