Chapter 7

“You know I am kinda of liking the new you,” Paisley teased from the floor with a textbook between her legs. I just raised an eyebrow at her to continue. “This serious version of you,” she clarified. “You are taking your books more seriously now,” she teased, which I just scoffed at. I needed to dominate both my studies and the ice if I wanted to succeed. Revenge is important, but I can’t let history repeat itself. “Shoot, the exhibition match is about to start,” Paisley startled me out of my thoughts. “Are you going to attend? You know, with Damon…” I knew what she was getting at and I just sighed, got up to get dressed. I had bigger things to worry about than that man. “Let’s go, Pai,” was my response before leaving her in my room and heading for my car. I didn’t have the mental energy to deal with this right now. We found seats closer to the rink but a bit further back. I didn’t want Damon to get any stupid ideas from me being here. All teams started walking out as the crowd roared at them. Most were for the Northridge team. Only a few cheered for Fordnast. Probably diehard fans or something. “Seems you have some competition,” Paisley whispered in my ear. I just scowled at her, which made her burst out into a fit of giggles at my expression. I turned my attention back on the game to watch and see if my plan succeeded. Since it was an exhibition match, both captains came forward to shake hands before returning to their previous positions. I could feel the tension between the two of them. Wait, what are they wearing? “Is it because your ex and current flame are about to go at it?” she leaned in to tease me. “You can support Kai. Nobody would mind. He is better than that jerk. It feels like they are fighting for you instead.” What was with her and shipping me with Draven? Besides, that was not my main issue. They were not wearing the new jerseys. The new jerseys that signified the sponsorship with Voss Enterprise and Northridge. This had Damon written all over it — probably a moronic attempt at getting back at me. I will deal with it after. I will make sure he eats the cost. Throughout the entire game I was livid. I couldn’t even enjoy it. Thanks to this stunt. The game had already ended on a tie, with Northridge getting through it by a miraculous slapshot. But it did confirm my theory though — that Damon was targeting Kai. The body checking with Winchester from Damon and the other players confirmed it. Kai’s accident wasn’t a mistake. It was deliberate. But now I know that Zane could be a useful tool for later. I waited until they had gone inside before making my move. “I am going to go handle something,” I told Paisley as I headed toward the locker room. As I stepped closer I could hear the distinct sounds of celebration coming from the locker room. Perfect. I barged in without knocking. I didn’t beat around the bush. “Why weren’t you wearing the new jerseys?”
