Chapter 19

A glass of wine rested firmly in my grasp as I surveyed the sight in front of me. It was a charity occasion, brimming with multiple socialites engaging with fake smiles and business talks. I didn’t even want to be here but I had to, mostly because that ‘man’ forced me to. Every single day that passed my anger for him grew. The hatred I felt for him intensified. Being here made my skin crawl. It reminded me of the future. Where I died and how I died. I couldn’t take a sip of the wine in my hand because of those memories. How can he be so reckless? But then again, greed is truly human nature. The same greed was what led Rozetta to murder me for my family’s wealth. The same greed was what made father thirst for more, luring him into joining an illegal business. All for the expansion of wealth, seeking more riches that he couldn’t spend at once. The same greed was what led to my downfall in the future, what made me seek out the love from Damon. Wanting it all for myself and no one else, consumed by the desire to own him. I inadvertently made him choose Rozetta over me. Greed truly is a despicable trait. I pressed the wine to my mouth, wanting to take a sip, but then hesitated and dropped it back. I was still paranoid from my death. How I died in the future was still something I was sensitive about. The feeling hadn’t faded one bit. “Didn’t expect to see you here,” I heard that familiar voice. My heart beat quicker at the thought of him and sweat pooled on my nape. “What do you want, Damon?” I turned to face him, still having that indifferent expression I have with him now. “Can’t I come say hello?” He chuckled, moving closer to where I stood. I took a step back away from the guardrail. I didn’t trust him. If he is capable of planning to hurt Kai, who am I that he wouldn’t do the same? “What’s up with you?” He spoke with annoyance. Was he being for real? “Nothing is wrong with me. Now if you don’t mind, I have other places to be.” I tried to move past him but he stopped me. “I wanted to talk to you.” He stood in front of me, blocking my way. I looked behind me and only saw a metal railing. I was trapped in here with him unless I made a scene or pushed past him. I didn’t want to resort to either but I didn’t want to speak to him too. But I guess I have to. “Talk,” I commanded. He had a pleased smile on his face at my words. “Elara, I know we had a disagreement for the past couple of weeks now, with you wanting me to limit the time I spent with Rozetta,” he started to say. “These few weeks we had been apart had been the hardest for me. I miss you a lot. I had come to accept that I made a mistake. I am sorry about all the times I called you insecure over Rozetta being around me and your demand for it to stop.” He moved closer. “Elara, what I am saying is that I am sorry. I am sorry for the things I said and did. I love you. I still do. Can we please go back to how we were?” He finished looking at me with hopeful eyes. I didn’t know what overtook me but my shoulders shook silently before I covered my mouth to stop myself from causing a scene. I watched his face slowly fall at my actions, replaced with a frown. I managed to calm down a bit. “Oh my god, that was such a funny joke, Damon,” I whispered to him, biting back the laugh. “It wasn’t a joke,” he responded, that frown still smeared on his face. “Then it’s a funny string of words,” I corrected him. “Are you done? Can I leave now?” I moved to the side to pass him but he still blocked me. “I came here to apologise and for us to get back together and this is how you treat me?” He spoke, visibly more frustrated now. “Damon, I already told you we are done. Through.” I spoke louder this time around. What was not getting through to his thick skull? “I am only doing this because I love you, Elara. Can’t you see that? I love you for f**k’s sake.” He gripped my hand tightly. “Don’t touch m—” I started to say but then that pain again came, the sign of another vision. The world became dark again. Slowly the light rushed back. I began to see things. It was just like the last vision. I was in Damon’s room. “Everything is prepared,” Damon spoke on the phone to someone. “Yep, Cap. The guys already have his picture. Everything is ready. Once he is alone after practice they will knock him unconscious and finish the job,” Zane answered back. What are they plotting? “You think this is a good idea? We could just target him on the rink and break his legs there. It would be ruled as an accident but with this it would be seen as intentional.” “Just get the s**t I asked you done. I want Draven in a wheelchair by tonight,” he spoke confidently. “What are you going to do tonight?” Zane asked him. “I managed to get an invite to a charity event. I am going to try and win Elara back,” he answered confidently. “What if she doesn’t agree? Her behaviour nowadays is a bit erratic,” Zane answered with a yawn on his end. “Then I will find another wealthy socialite. I am not leaving there without getting a new backer.” He hung up the phone, giving himself one more once-over. I was pulled out of the vision, my vision turning from black to white in a matter of seconds. I slowly regained consciousness. My vision and hearing were distorted at first, but slowly I started getting them back. My eyesight became more focused and I saw the face of Damon along with his voice. “Elara.” I shoved him off me and staggered to my feet. They are planning on crippling Kai. “Elara, you just fainted. Try and sit down,” he spoke softly, moving to touch me again. Who was he putting this devoted act on for? I pushed him away and moved towards the staircase to leave. I pulled out my phone, frantically scrolling through my contacts to call him. I called and called but he didn’t answer. Ordering a taxi, “Fordnast University,” I shouted as I got in. The driver looked at me like I was crazy. “I will pay you the amount.” With that he headed straight for Fordnast University. I sent one desperate text: *Kai, whatever you do don’t stay alone. There are people after you.* I kept on trying his number. Fordnast was a three-hour journey and I was ready to bank on it for Kai’s sake. I still called him but it didn’t go through. It was most likely on do not disturb. I was already an hour into the car ride, calling Kai every minute I could. I couldn’t let a single second pass by. My phone rang and it was him calling. “Kai, don’t let your teammates leave your side. Remain with them at all times,” I said without taking a single breath. “Yes, I did that. We managed to stop them.” I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding. “Thank goodness, Kai,” I said, exasperated. “Elara, I got your message but how did you know I was going to be attacked?” His tone was cold and detached, just like the first day we met. “Kai, I am almost at Fordnast. I will explain everything when I get there,” I tried to reason with him. “No, Elara. I want to know now. I am not waiting until when you get here. Tell me who is responsible.” He didn’t sound angry but was still furious. I didn’t want to tell him, because how do I explain this to him? “It’s because I saw it,” I answered honestly. “You saw it?” He asked, still in confusion. “Yes.” I braced myself to spill everything to him. “I can see into the future.”
