The Council Strikes Back

1485 Words
The news spread faster than Viktoria expected. By the following morning, everyone in the Draven Empire seemed to know. Viktoria Draven had accepted the Wells marriage proposal. The same council that had once divided the empire because they believed she was too young to rule now had another reason to summon her. She knew it before the messenger even arrived. A knock sounded against her office door. "Come in." A council messenger stepped inside and bowed. "Lady Viktoria, the council requests your presence immediately." Viktoria looked up from the report in front of her. "Requests?" The messenger hesitated. "They have summoned you." Alexander, standing near the bookshelves, exchanged a brief glance with her. Viktoria closed the file. "Tell them I'll be there." The messenger bowed and left. Alexander approached her desk. "They moved quickly." "They're afraid." "Of the marriage?" "Of what the marriage could create." Alexander nodded. "Then don't let them see fear from you." Viktoria stood. "I'm not afraid." "I know." He handed her coat to her. "But remember what your grandfather taught you." Viktoria took it. "Which lesson?" "Never walk into a room full of people who want something from you without knowing what they want first." She smiled faintly. "That's why I have you." Alexander's expression softened. "Your grandfather trusted me with your future." "And I trust you with it too." They left together. --- The council chamber looked exactly as Viktoria remembered it. The same long table. The same high-backed chairs. The same people who had once looked at her as though she were a child pretending to understand politics. But four years had changed the balance between them. When Viktoria entered, every conversation stopped. Alexander followed behind her. At the far end of the table sat the council members. And beside them sat Marcus. Her father. Viktoria's expression remained calm. "Why am I here?" One of the senior council members stood. "Because you've made a decision that affects the entire Draven Empire." Viktoria took her seat. "My marriage affects my personal life." "Not when the person you're marrying belongs to the Wells family." Marcus spoke before the council member could continue. "The Wells family has interests across several territories." Viktoria looked at him. "And?" Marcus's jaw tightened. "You know exactly what that means." "No. Explain it." The room became quiet. Marcus leaned forward. "If you marry Elias Wells, the Wells family gains influence over your territory." "That is an assumption." "It's a fact." "No," Viktoria replied calmly. "It's a possibility." One council member interrupted. "Lady Viktoria, this alliance could destabilize the division." Viktoria looked at him. "The division you created?" Silence. She continued. "You divided the empire four years ago because you claimed I was too young to govern the entire territory." Her voice remained steady. "I accepted your decision. I governed my territory. I strengthened it. I built relationships. I expanded businesses. I protected the people placed under my authority." She looked around the table. "And now that I've done exactly what you said I wasn't capable of doing, you're suddenly concerned about my decisions?" Nobody answered. Marcus finally spoke. "This isn't about your ability to govern." Viktoria turned toward him. "Then what is it about?" "Your marriage could give the Wells family access to the empire." "And what would you call your own alliances?" Marcus's expression hardened. "My alliances are necessary for stability." "So is mine." "They aren't the same." "You're right." Viktoria leaned back. "Mine might actually reunite the empire." A murmur passed through the room. Marcus stood. "You cannot simply decide to take back what was divided." "I didn't say I would." His eyes narrowed. "But you're planning to." Viktoria smiled faintly. "Perhaps." One of the council members struck the table lightly. "Enough." He looked at Viktoria. "The council cannot approve an alliance that threatens the balance of the empire." Viktoria's eyes narrowed. "Approve?" She stood. "I didn't come here for permission." The room went silent. "I came because you summoned me." She looked at each council member. "But if you're asking whether I intend to abandon my claim because you're uncomfortable with my marriage, the answer is no." Marcus stared at her. "You think Elias Wells will hand you the crown?" "No." Viktoria's voice became colder. "I think I will take it myself." Alexander remained silent behind her. But there was unmistakable pride in his expression. The council members exchanged uneasy glances. Finally, the eldest among them spoke. "The marriage will be reviewed." Viktoria looked at him. "By whom?" "The council." "No." His eyebrows lifted. "You refuse?" "I refuse to let the council decide who I marry." The words hung in the chamber. "This marriage is an agreement between me and Elias Wells. You may question its political consequences, but you do not own my future." Marcus's hand tightened around the edge of the table. "This isn't over." Viktoria looked directly at him. "I know." Then she turned and walked out. Alexander followed. --- Outside the chamber, Viktoria finally allowed herself to breathe. "They're going to fight this," Alexander said. "I expected that." "Marcus more than anyone." "He has the most to lose." Alexander nodded. "He's afraid of Elias." Viktoria stopped walking. "Why?" "Because Elias isn't simply offering you a marriage." Alexander lowered his voice. "He's offering you access to influence your father cannot control." Viktoria looked toward the council doors. "And Marcus knows it." "Yes." She was quiet for a moment. Then she asked, "Did you find anything else about the Wells family?" "Not enough." "Keep searching." "I will." They continued down the corridor. Then Viktoria stopped again. "What about Elias?" "What about him?" "I need to speak with him." Alexander looked at her. "About the marriage?" "About everything." --- That evening, Elias arrived at the Draven estate. This time, Viktoria met him in the library. No council. No family representatives. No audience. Only Alexander remained nearby. Elias entered and closed the door behind him. "The council summoned you." "News travels quickly." "Marcus contacted my family." Viktoria looked at him. "I assumed he would." Elias took a seat. "He doesn't want this marriage." "Neither did I." A faint smile touched his lips. "That's reassuring." She ignored it. "I want to establish something before we continue." "I'm listening." "This marriage does not make you my ruler." "I never expected it to." "You don't control my territory." "I know." "The Wells family doesn't interfere with my government." "Agreed." "And you don't make decisions concerning the Draven Empire without speaking to me first." Elias nodded. "Agreed." Viktoria studied him. "And in return?" "The Wells family will support your claim to reunite the empire." "Publicly?" "Yes." "Even if the council opposes us?" "Yes." "And Marcus?" "Especially Marcus." Viktoria sat back. For a moment, neither spoke. Then Elias said, "There's something you should know." "What?" "The council isn't your biggest problem." Viktoria frowned. "Marcus?" Elias shook his head. "Not exactly." "Then who?" "The people behind him." Viktoria's expression changed. "What people?" Elias looked toward Alexander. "There are members of the council who benefit from the empire remaining divided." Alexander's face hardened. "We suspected that." "You were right." Viktoria leaned forward. "How many?" "Enough." "Names." "I'll give them to you." "When?" "After the marriage agreement is formally announced." Viktoria's eyes narrowed. "Why wait?" "Because once the announcement is made, they'll reveal themselves." Alexander stepped forward. "That's dangerous." Elias looked at him. "Yes." Viktoria remained silent. Then she nodded. "Do it." Elias stood. "Then we're agreed." He turned toward the door. "Elias." He stopped. Viktoria looked at him. "Whatever happens, I won't allow this alliance to become another way for people to control me." Elias met her eyes. "Neither will I." He left. Viktoria remained in the library. Alexander came to stand beside her. "Do you believe him?" Viktoria looked toward the door. "I don't know." "That's not an answer." "It's the only honest one." Alexander nodded. Then a servant rushed into the room. "Lady Viktoria." She turned. "What is it?" The servant handed her a sealed message. "Someone delivered this." Viktoria broke the seal. Her eyes moved across the page. Her expression changed. Alexander noticed immediately. "What does it say?" Viktoria handed him the message. He read it. His face hardened. It was from Marcus. Only one sentence. If Viktoria wants a war for the crown, then Marcus will give her one. Alexander looked up. Viktoria took the message back. For four years, Marcus had defended his half of the empire. Now he was finally preparing to fight for it. Viktoria folded the message. "Then let him come." She looked toward the window. The city stretched beneath her. Her territory. Her responsibility. Her inheritance. And somewhere beyond it was the other half of the empire. The half she intended to reclaim. The council had tried to stop her. Marcus had declared his intentions. And Elias Wells had placed himself beside her. The game had changed. This time, Viktoria was ready.
