Ahead, rocks were tumbling down the slope, triggered by the fire, forming a mini landslide.
Heart in my throat, I yanked the wheel, dodging the rocks while trying to keep the fawn safe. The mud and bumps made the buggy feel like it was at war; every hit threatened to throw me off balance.
The fawn curled up tight in my arms, and I whispered, “Don’t be scared. I’ve got you. We’re getting out together.” My voice was soft, but it anchored me, pulling me back to focus.
