I bit into a slice of cake, way too sweet, and leaned back on the sofa to let it hit.
“He’s a problem too,” I muttered.
“Oh?” Maddie perked up immediately. “Do tell—what kind of problem?”
“Last time he said he wanted to meet up, he chose the time and place.” I stared at the ceiling. “A week’s gone by. Nothing. Not a peep.”
Maddie laughed. “Classic guy move. Keeps you dangling on purpose.”
“The thing is,” I frowned, “I don’t exactly have time to play along right now. WHR just pinged me—there’s a mission in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest in California, rescuing black-tailed deer. They want me to go, a few days at least.”
