The drizzle started as we walked outside, a fine mist that clung to our jackets and hair as we stepped out of the diner. The air smelled like wet asphalt and fried food, sharp and heavy all at once. Streetlamps glowed in hazy circles, their light fractured by the rain. Sage tugged her hood up, hunching against the chill. “At least rain makes everything smell clean,” she said, her voice too loud in the quiet. “Fresh.
