Chapter 33: Back To The Wheel

1261 Words
Todd continued to ignore Caleb’s healers and eventually, they grew bored and left him alone. Caleb’s interest, however, did not wane. He wanted to know what had happened to Todd’s car, so he sent one of his remaining healers to investigate. The healer nodded and said, “If I find anything incriminating, you will be the first to know.” Caleb laughed as his healer walked off in the direction of Todd’s car. Of course, Todd knew that Caleb had it out for him. It was not until he returned to the classroom, though, that he realized that his heart was full of anger. He was angry at Caleb, but he was also angry about what the evil Asian monk was putting his family through. He had taken D.S.G. Unlimited, and he had practically forced his parents had been forced to flee the country and go into hiding. Furthermore, before he started to trouble Aaron, he had actually sent people to kill him. Damn it! – thought Todd – I cannot stand for this! I must respond somehow! He thought about his two skills, Driving and Proficient in fighting. They had served him well in the past, but he was not sure that they would be enough to get him the revenge that he wanted. He wanted to defeat the monk, he knew that he would have to draw a prize. After exchanging two thousand Slap-Face Numerical Value for Yellow Rosewood, Todd would still have twelve thousand Slap-Face Numerical Value, so he had enough. He was hesitant, though. He knew that, as with any lottery system, there was an element of risk.   Nothing ventured, nothing gained – he thought. It was something his father had always said, and they were words that he had lived by up until now. He smiled as he thought of his father, and he summoned the Pretentious system and selected the Lottery system. There was a large turntable floating above the interface of the Lottery system. The turntable was divided into thirty-six spaces. It looked almost exactly like the wheel on Wheel of Fortune, except that all of the prizes had been darkened. Suddenly, the mechanical voice in his mind spoke up. It said, "Say ‘Yes’ to confirm your desire to spend 10,000 Slap-Face Numerical Value to enter the lottery’s draw." “Yes,” Todd whispered. 10,000 Slap-Face Numerical Value was deducted from his total, and almost immediately, each of the thirty-six areas on the turntable lit up and text appeared on them. Selections included: “Ethereal animals-black Kylin (larva). Ultimate black Kylin destroys stars, and its ability includes regional trampling." And: "Spear in Fighting Skills (incomplete). If you learn the complete Spear in Fighting Skills, you will be invincible." And: "Broken Space Elixir (volume production). Broken Space Elixir is a poison that has been refined to kill or negatively affect ancient immortals. Genuine Broken Space Elixir can destroy the defense of an immortal and cause Toxicity.”  Todd looked at the prizes and thought – I wish that I could take them all! If he had the Broken Space Elixir, he could potentially poison the evil Asian monk. Even if it did not kill him, it would incapacitate him, then Todd could kill him by a more conventional means.  There was also Black Kylin to think about. Black Kylin was a mythical animal. Although it was only a larva, it was capable of growth, and its Regional Trampling ability was extremely powerful. It was the Broken Space Elixir that he wanted, though, and as he gave the wheel a spin, he sent a prayer out to the Gods – Come on, Broken space elixir!" The turntable started to decelerate after spinning for a while, and the pointer slowly entered the area where the Broken Space Elixir was, and it seemed like it was going to stop there. Todd groaned as the needle skipped the desired space and came to a stop on the prize labeled, Book-Stealth Mastery. Book Stealth Mastery? – Todd frowned – What the heck is Book Stealth Mastery?  He was disappointed that he didn't get the Broken space elixir, but he tried not to get it down. After all, he knew that there were no bad prizes. Some just happened to be more useful in different situations. So, he turned his attention to the Book Stealth Mastery and summoned it. The book floated towards Todd, and as it got closer, it turned into countless pieces of light and they were absorbed by Todd's body. Almost immediately, he felt his eyes light up. He closed them, then opened them again, and he recognized an innate ability in his mind. When there was nothing left to learn, he allowed his consciousness to return to his classroom. A few minutes passed, and then the dean appeared in the doorway. He looked into the room and shouted, "Is Todd a student in this class? Todd?!?! If you are in there, come out." Todd’s classmates turned to look at him, and as he stood up, he saw that there were two policemen standing behind the dean. This cannot be good – he thought. There was nowhere to go, though, so he ambled towards the door. When he arrived there, he pretended to be a good student, and he asked the dean, "What can I do for you, sir?" "Don't give me any lip,” the dean hissed. “Come with me and keep your mouth shut!" The dean led Todd into an upstairs office. The police followed behind Todd, and once everyone was inside, the dean asked if he could be excused. “You may go,” the first officer replied. "I will put in a good word for you with young master Caleb Stone. And we shouldn’t have to involve the school's superintendent over such a trivial matter." “My thoughts exactly.” The dean smiled, thanked the police officers, and left the office. Am I to be interrogated? – Todd wondered nervously. It seemed so – But why? Once the dean was gone, the second officer closed the door. They sat Todd down, and they sat across from him to create a triangle with all the focus being on Todd. "Are you Todd Bower?” the first officer asked. But before he could answer, the second officer laughed and said, “Of course, you are. You are young and brave, but you are also stupid. You don't even have a driver's license. How dare you drive around without one? And that’s just one of the many crimes you have committed, isn’t it?" Since the officer had mentioned Caleb, Todd knew that this was a set-up. Therefore, he no longer saw any reason to pretend to be a good student. He smirked and said, "You will have to tell me what I am being accused of, and what evidence you have. Otherwise, you are violating my rights!" “That’s pretty rich.” The first officer chuckled. Then he turned to his partner and said, “This piece of s**t thinks he has rights! For Christ’s sake, that’s rich!” The second officer looked at Todd and said, "If there was evidence, we would have taken you to the police station a long time ago. Thus, we need you to confess. Do you deny that you were driving without a license?”
