Chapter 3

I watched them leave together, lost in thought. Back when my parents divorced, Dad took my sister Ruby with him and married the daughter of the wealthy Leos. After that, I never saw Ruby again. Five years ago, she suddenly came to find me. She said, "I'll give you a hundred thousand dollars. Take my place and help me take care of someone." Mom had just passed away from illness, and our family was in debt. I had no other choice. Only later did I find out that the person she wanted me to care for was Kane, a genius racer who'd been in a car accident right after they got engaged. She said with a look of disgust, "A blind man who's no longer useful, who would want to take care of him? If I weren't afraid of damaging my reputation, I would've called off the engagement long ago." At that time, Ruby's career was just starting out. She was afraid of being accused of abandoning her fiancé who'd fallen on hard times, so she found me. Kane had gone from being the center of attention to a helpless wreck who couldn't take care of himself. The drastic reversal of fortune left him with a terrible temper. When I first started looking after him, he was always verbally abusive toward me. But I was just doing a job for money, so no matter what he said, I never argued back. Until that day, when I went to the cemetery to visit my mom and returned a bit late. He started lashing out again. He said, "Ruby, stop acting in front of me! Don't think I don't know... deep down, you actually can't stand me, and you're only doing this because you're afraid of what outsiders would say..." Before he could finish, I leaned down and kissed him. It was my first kiss, still very inexperienced, and I was all teeth. The tips of Kane's ears burned red. He stammered, "You!" I leaned against his shoulders, breathless, and said, "Did you feel that? Do you still think I can't stand you?" Noah's voice snapped me back to reality. He said, "Wren, have you finished checking everything? There's a networking dinner tonight. I'll take you to meet some people in the industry. As journalists, it's all about connections." I quickly thanked him. When we arrived at the hotel parking lot, my eyes landed on that familiar black Rolls-Royce. I froze instantly. "Kane and the others are here tonight too?" I asked. Noah smiled at me and said, "We're all part of the same circle." It was too late to leave now. I could only brace myself and follow him in. The banquet hall was huge. We junior reporters weren't at the same table as Kane and Ruby. Noah introduced me to the veterans one by one. Being the newbie, I got roped into round after round of toasts. After a few, my head was spinning so badly that I apologized hastily, covered my mouth, and rushed into the bathroom. After throwing up and rinsing my face, I ran into Kane the moment I stepped out. My heart gave a violent thump. I tried to pretend I hadn't seen him and sidestep him. I had only taken one step when Kane spoke from behind me. "Wren," he said. That voice held a complicated emotion. I froze on the spot. I forced myself to turn and face him, and when I looked up, I met his deep gaze. I smiled apologetically and said, "Kane. How do you know my name?" He didn't answer. He just looked at me for a long moment before speaking. He said, "Your colleague dragged you around, introducing you to everyone. Now everybody knows." Remembering Noah's loud voice, my cheeks burned. I rushed to explain, "Sorry, my colleague's just overly enthusiastic. I apologize if we disturbed you." Kane fell silent again. Under the warm yellow light, he narrowed his eyes slightly and looked at me, a faint smile playing on his lips. He said, "In your eyes, do I seem like the petty type?" "That's not what I meant," I replied. A second later, he pulled a black business card from his pocket and held it out. He said, "I have a job opportunity for you. Want to give it a shot?"
