When Billie reached the Dallas field office, she went directly to Assistant Director Reyes’s office, where the man was expecting her. His secretary waved her on through, and she entered while the man was on the phone. Seeing her come through the door, he enigmatically said, “Look, I have to call you back, but go ahead. You have the green light to proceed.” Without saying goodbye, Reyes hung up. The next instant, he almost too-casually closed a folder that had been sitting on top of his desk and slid it inside his top drawer.
“You’re punctual. I like that, Agent Davies.”
She smiled sweetly. “It’s Agent Crowne, sir.”
