My face dropped and I was serious within a moment. My back straightened as it stiffened, my shoulders pushing back. My heart was racing upon my name leaving his full lips.
“How do you know my last name?” My voice had dropped low so only we could hear our conversation. The restaurant was not busy by any means. Didn’t change the fact this man knew something about me I never divulged.
“When that man grabbed your stuff and I took it back? I couldn’t wake you. So I took the liberty of finding out you name. Hope you don’t mind.” I sighed and relaxed. I sat back into my seat.
“You okay?” He asked, raising his head from his hands too look at me. I smiled and shook my head.
“Totally fine!” I lied. “Well, I wanted to help people.” That’s right, lets avoid the confrontation, find out who he is and fast. Why is he here? I know he’s Air Force. I wasn’t high up but I saw some f****d up s**t that I can guarantee was one hundred percent illegal. I’ll have to put my guard up even more around this man until I find out what he is after. I smiled as I sipped my coffee. I had to act fast and get out of here.
“So, that’s it?” He asked dropping his arms in disbelief. I shrugged.
“Now, your prior military. I saw your VA card. You didn’t want to re-enlist?” hes prying an awful lot. Making me think of that cheater.... I cleared my throat.
“My boyfriend wanted me to stop deploying.” I stated it matter of fact like. His brows furrowed and he leaned forward again.
“You have a boyfriend?” Do I sense sadness in his question? I smiled, leaning forward and placing my chin on my hands.
“No.” He smiled at my reply.
“Then consider this a first date!” My jaw dropped. Now wait a minute here, pretty boy! I haven’t been on a date in at least three years! How do you think its that easy to get one? This man was unbelievable! I was about to give him a piece of my mind when my phone rang. Was it Memorial Hospital?
“Betty! How could you just leave me by myself?!” I pouted even though she couldn’t see me.
“I’m sorry but oh-my-gosh! GIRL! I think I found the perfect man!” I sighed.
“When can I be home?” I asked, skipping over her nonsense.
“Oh, um…. Well,” I could hear her fidgeting. “He’s asleep in my bed right now. I think he’ll be here until the afternoon.” I groaned.
“Seriously?” I held my head in my hand while hearing her apologize. I sighed as I hung up the phone. I slid it back into my pocket and sunk into the chair. I looked up at him, his gaze was asking me already.
“My friend I was at the bar with last night has a man in our house.” I crossed my arms. “Guessing he’s this month’s flavor.” It was one thing I wasn’t fond of with Betty but who was I to judge. He chuckled.
“I’m taking that as in you’ve been single for quite a while or that the last one ended bad or both.”
“You don’t know how right you are with the ‘or both’ part.” I stood up. “Well, I appreciate the food. I best be getting to it now.”
“To what? You’ve been en booted from your house.” He reminded me of something I didn’t need reminding of.
“Hospitals keeps some beds for us to use if we need to bunk a night. Showers, too.” I patted myself to ensure I had everything on me. Phone and wallet? Check. I left my bag at work so I had a fresh pair of undies there.
“Why not come to my place?” I laughed a bit too quickly.
“Oh no. I’m not like that!” I smiled shaking my head.
“No, I’m not either. I just think my guest bed and shower would be a bit nicer than the hospital ones.” He stood next to me, leaving more than enough cash on the table. I put my hand on my hip.
“What makes you think the hospital beds aren’t comfy?” Oh the sass was thick.
“I’ve slept in one before and I can promise my beds are way comfier.” I raised a brow to it but shrugged.
“I don’t have any change of cloths… Mind if we stop so I can grab some things?” He nodded, placing his hand at the base of my back leading me out the restaurant.
We stopped at a clothing store where I quickly grabbed off the clearance rack. I got a large t-shirt, some stretchy work out bottoms, undies and cheap sandals. I was proud of my total. Under fifteen bucks! Not bad! I was about to grab my card when Xander chimed in.
“You sure you don’t want something nice?” I looked over my shoulder.
“Xander, were not going to a fancy restaurant, its for me to change into and crash in.” I explained.
“No, no, no.” He held up a finger. I put my hand on my hip watching him. He quickly browsed the sections.
“Man on a mission…” I muttered. He smirked and looked up at me. Ah, s**t. He heard that. I blushed. His hands feathered through the clothes until he stopped. He pulled a deep blue dress from the rack. It was a t-shirt dress, form fitted looking. I shook my head.
“Not happening.” I crossed my arms as he walked up to the counter. “Nope.” He smiled.
“Pleeeeeaasseeeeee. You’ll look beautiful in it!” His eyes formed crescent moons as he gave me a wide smile. God this man was handsome. His smile was breath taking. I rolled my eyes. He shimmied as he placed it on the counter. I turned to the lady and handed her my card. She showed me she had a card already in her hand. I blinked and looked at him smiling like a kid who got his way.
“Thank you!” He grabbed the bag from her and went to leave the store. I watched him until he paused to look back at me.
“Aren’t you wanting a shower and a fluffy bed?” I bit my lip. “C’mon!” He waved to me. I smiled and followed him.
“So, your car was here this whole time?” I asked in disbelief as I starred at the midnight blue Stingray Corvette. He must be packing some serious doe!
“I thought the walk would be nice. Plus,” He gestured towards his car. “Most women see this and then decide they want a date.” He flashed a smile my way before getting into his car. I smiled shaking my head. What have I gotten myself into? I went to open the door and felt a rubbery bump under the handle. I pushed it and the door opened. The smell of a new car hit me. God, do I love that new car smell. The interior was black with blue seams. Fancy. His car was barely a foot off the ground, it felt like I was practically sitting on the floor. Once I had pulled my legs in and shut the door, I gave a quick glance around the car, checking for any visible weapons. Yes, I am still very much on alert. I didn’t see any and continued to buckle up.
“Okay!” I said looking at him. He smiled, grabbing the shift and putting it in reverse. The car drove exceptionally smooth on the ride to his place. I hardly felt a bump. The familiar sway of a car made my eyes heavy. The sight of greenery blurred as I fought sleep. I was all too comfortable with this man I had just met. I should really be more careful. I think all this yet here we are, pulling up to a house. I glanced around and noticed we were a ways away from town now. But it felt weird. It was like I could sense something coming up. A shiver ran through my body as it warned me. My hairs stood up on my arm. What was it about this place? It was like I wasn’t supposed to be here.
