Once I’ve rinsed off, I leaned down and grabbed my clothes. They were soaked. I grabbed my body wash, squirted it into my clothes and started lathering them up.
‘Don’t rinse them fully. Leave some soap in them.’
‘Good idea, Luna.’ The situation has gotten serious really fast. I sighed as I wrung my clothes. Soapy water hit the tile floors and got my legs and arms soaped up again. I threw my clothes out the shower and rinsed off. I turned the water off, sighed and leaning against the wall. This will be the last time I’m in here. I was enjoying this place, too.
I pushed myself off the wall and went for my bag. My hair dripped as I rummaged through it looking for my towel. I sighed and looked around the empty room. I saw a pink fluffy towel and snatched it. I quickly dried off and threw it back. I doubt they would notice someone else used it nor did I care. I went back to my bag and quickly got dressed. I pulled out my perfume and sprayed away, choking myself in the process.
‘Hair.’ Luna was trying to cover all bases. I knew she was just as worried as I was. I spayed my hair as she said to and then sprayed my shoes. I sprayed the inside, outside and the soles. I wasn’t about to be tracked. It rained yesterday morning as I was coming into work so my scent should be washed away by now. They shouldn’t be able to track me to Bettys house. I snagged the brush through my hair a few times, leaving it down. If the wind caught me it would blow the smell of shampoo and perfume over mine, giving me coverage. I packed my wet clothes in my bag and headed out. I headed out the door and took a deep breath.
‘Act normal.’
‘I know that!’ I snapped back at Luna. She gave me a growl.
‘Sorry. I know your trying to help.’ I apologized. She went quiet, letting me leave without looking suspicious.
I sighed as I passed the nurses station. The same nurse stood up. I smiled,
“I’m going to swing by my home quickly and grab food before my shift. I want to sleep in my own bed for a few hours. I’ll see you at 2200!” I waved. She smiled and waved.
“See you then!” She called out and sat back down. I unlocked the doors and walked out.
‘And just like that were gone.’ Luna purred. She was excited to start a new life. I could feel her hope in myself. I felt free again. Yet, I was saddened. I pulled the hood over my head. It wasn’t really cold outside, but the skies were dark, threatening to rain. Weird how the weather here could change so fast. I quickly walked towards Bettys home.
I saw Bettys little house come into view. I watched the windows. I can’t let her see me. If she did, my disappearing act would be dead. I felt sad that I had to do this to my friend. But I needed to do what had to be done. I sighed and collected myself. Now was not the time to feel sorry for myself. Now was the time to act! I couldn’t see much movement in the home so Betty must be asleep.
‘Doesn’t she have a man over?’ Luna was right. I had totally forgotten about him! I’ll have to camp out. I dodged into the woods just behind the house and took out my phone. I cleared it out, snapped the SD card in half. After clearing it out to factory reset, I looked at it once more. This thing was expensive. But I can’t be found. I watch the road and waited for a passing car. I tossed the phone in front of the car and prayed the car ran over it. I gave a quiet “yes!” and fist bumped the air as it shattered my phone. If I leave it there it will look like I dropped it in a struggle. I waited until night fell and I watched Betty get into her car and leave. I had watched the man leave a few hours prior.
‘Coast is clear.’ Luna whispered. I smiled thinking that she wouldn’t be heard even if she screamed. Only I can hear her. I duck walked to the edge of the woods, looking both ways. I knew no neighbors had any cameras. One had a flood light but it had broken a while back when the kids were playing with a football. I quickly ran to the back door and silently slid inside. I left all the lights off as I ran to my room. My room was dark except for the evening sun coming through the window. It gave everything a red hue. I quickly slid my bed to the side and hit a floor board. It gave away with a pop sound and there was all my cash I had stored. I pulled the baggy out and reached further in. I pulled out my second bag of cash out. This should be enough to get me started. I paused before reaching back in. If I recall, I left a phone in here, too. I had purchased it off the black market a few years back. It was a simple flip phone but it did what it needed to. No one could trace it. I plugged it into the portable charger I had in my bag. I got up and grabbed a book bag.
‘What are you doing?! I thought you weren’t going to bring anything with you!’ Luna growled.
‘I can stage a robbery.’ I replied. She nodded in approval. I packed my money away and threw my phone in there along with it. I grabbed a few pieces of clothing and shoved them in. I had an extra toothbrush and toothpaste in my old bag that I had transferred over. Looking around I frowned. I had made a life here and was sad to see it go. I sighed and started rummaging through my room. Got to make it look like someone was looking for something after all. Before leaving I place the floorboard back in pace. I had thrown my bag onto the bed and left my door open as I made my way to her room where I did the same thing. I took some of her cash that was laying around to make it realistic. I dropped some in the living room as well. I opened the drawers and then ran out the house. I locked the back door behind me.
‘Do it.’ Luna said. I turned around and kicked the back-door in. It came off the hinges and made a loud crashing sound.
‘Perfect!’ Luna purred in satisfaction. She was ready. I jogged off the back porch and back into the woods.
