Give Me Your Number

Su Su’s mocking smile froze the moment Eliana turned toward her, eyebrow raised, voice lazy but clear: “Time to pay up, Dr. Su.” It hit Su Su like a brick. She’d been too busy being bitter and envious to remember the wager she’d made. Right in front of Mr. Lancaster, no less. There was no way she could allow herself to lose face now. No way! She forced a smile and shrugged. “What bet? I don’t recall saying anything.” The young nurse beside her couldn’t believe it. “Dr. Su, you clearly said if this young lady saved Mr. Lancaster Sr., you’d kneel and call her ancestor… even resign your position!” Su Su crossed her arms. “Did I? Where’s the proof?” Shameless. Completely shameless. Another doctor stepped up, visibly annoyed. “Everyone heard you. If you don’t want to kneel, at least apologize.” “You want me to apologize? For what?” Su Su scoffed, wearing an expression of smug innocence. “I didn’t do anything wrong.” Everyone exchanged a look. She’s hopeless. Then suddenly— THUD! In one swift move, Eliana kicked Su Su’s leg out from under her, sending her crashing to her knees. The sharp sound of her knees hitting the floor echoed through the hall. She groaned, unable to get up, her face pale with pain. “You—! You little brat—!” Su Su’s lips trembled. Eliana looked down at her, voice cold and razor-sharp. “As a doctor, your job is to save lives. Not gamble with them.” “I—I didn’t…” Su Su stuttered, eyes flicking toward Seren Lancaster. “Don’t listen to her! I didn’t do anything!” “Whether you did or wanted to,” Eliana said smoothly, “everyone here knows the truth.” Before Su Su could protest again, a voice rang through the hall. “What’s going on here?!” The hospital director, Dr. Fu, hurried toward them. “Mr. Lancaster, forgive me—I just returned from the medical conference. I heard what happened. Is your grandfather alright?” Then he spotted Su Su on her knees. “Su Su? What happened to you?” Tears welled in her eyes. She was just about to complain when Dr. Fu’s eyes landed on Eliana—and his expression changed. “Eliana? Why are you in surgical gear? Wait… are you the one who performed the surgery?” His eyes widened. “Everyone’s been talking about a teenage girl saving Mr. Lancaster. Was that… you?” Gasps spread through the crowd. Not only did the director know Eliana, he respected her? Dr. Fu looked around, confused. “Someone explain this. Eliana, you tell me.” “Uncle Fu,” she greeted him with a calm nod. “It’s nothing serious. Just letting you know—I never want to see her in the medical field again.” He blinked. “What did Su Su do to upset you?” “It’s not about upsetting me,” Eliana said coolly. Her aura turned razor-sharp. “It’s about common sense. Only an i***t would give heart failure patients an injection of cardio-suppressants and sedatives when they’re already going into shock.” Everyone around them flinched. “That’s a death sentence,” Eliana added. “You may as well pull the plug.” Dr. Fu turned sharply toward Su Su. “Why? Why didn’t you operate?” “The situation was too unstable… we couldn’t—” “You couldn’t? So instead you tried to kill him with medication?!” Dr. Fu roared. “You’re a doctor, Su Su! You don’t get to decide when someone dies just because you’re too scared to act!” Then, without waiting for her response, his tone turned final. “You’re dismissed. From this hospital—and from the medical profession.” “No! Director, please! Give me another chance!” Su Su cried, trying to stand—but her knees were still too sore. She knew Dr. Fu was only doing this because Seren Lancaster was watching. But still—her career was over. The salary. The respect. The bright future. Gone. “Take her away,” Dr. Fu ordered coldly. Then he turned to Seren and bowed slightly. “Mr. Lancaster, I sincerely apologize. Had it not been for Miss Eliana, we would’ve faced a tragedy. I’ll make sure nothing like this ever happens again.” Seren’s voice cut through the air, deep and cool. “What’s your name?” “Eliana,” she answered without hesitation. He handed her his phone. “Your number.” No nonsense. Just a simple command. She understood immediately. He wasn’t flirting—he needed a direct line in case something went wrong with his grandfather’s recovery. Without a word, Eliana took the phone and typed in her number. Her delicate fingers moved swiftly. Then she handed it back and looked him straight in the eyes. “Multiple open-heart surgeries have weakened the sternum,” she said. “It may not heal properly. Also, expect pain and swelling in the lower left leg from repeated intubation. Normal symptoms. Don’t blame me later.” Seren studied her calm expression, his eyes dark and unreadable. “What reduces the pain?” Eliana glanced at the experts behind him. “These guys can handle it.” Then she turned to Dr. Fu. “Uncle Fu, I’m heading out.” He blinked. “Of course, of course…” After changing out of her scrubs, Eliana pulled on a cap, slung her backpack over one shoulder, and headed for the exit. Behind her— “Eliana!” It was Tang Yiyang, catching up to her in the corridor. “Your right hand—are you okay?” he asked. “Why did you use your left during the surgery?” She flexed her wrist slightly. “It’s fine.” “Really?” he frowned. “Yeah,” she said, tossing him a smirk. “I beat someone up last night. My right hand’s a bit sore.” Tang Yiyang’s face twisted with a thousand questions. This girl… She could get her hands on a billion-dollar black-market drug. She could perform world-class surgery. And now… she also knew how to fight? What kind of superhuman is she…?
