Don’t Forget to Kneel

843 Words
“Miss,” Professor Zhang’s tone was kind but heavy, “This surgery is extremely difficult. Even after decades in the operating room, I have no confidence I can pull it off. Unless the late medical saint Dr. Crane himself returned from the dead, no one could guarantee the patient would survive. It’s not that we won’t do it—it’s that we truly can’t.” They weren’t just afraid of failure. Everyone in the room feared the consequences if they tried—and failed—to save the powerful Mr. S. Then, Eliana’s voice broke through the silence. “You said there’d be a reward if the patient survives?” Professor Zhang blinked, stunned by her question. “O-of course,” he stammered. “If you can save him, anything you ask.” Eliana’s savings had already been drained by White Family’s lies, and her grandmother’s hospital bills. A surgery like this could help her rebuild her life. Zhang saw the unwavering confidence in her eyes—sharp, icy, determined. “Do you really know medicine?” he asked hesitantly. “I know how to use a scalpel,” she replied casually, her crimson lips curving into a confident smirk. Zhang hesitated. “How would you treat him?” “Heart valve replacement. But I want Dr. Ethan Tang as my assistant.” Laughter rang out from across the room. “You? Work with Dr. Tang?” Su Su scoffed, clutching her lab coat as if that gave her more authority. “Do you even hear yourself? Do you know who Dr. Tang is?” She turned to Zhang and sneered, “Professor, we don’t have time for her delusions. Let’s stick to the original plan—stabilize him with an injection and wait for the family to sign.” She signaled a nurse. “Fetch the medicine. And call security—this girl is clearly crazy.” But the nurse hadn’t gone far. A deep voice echoed into the room. “Who’s looking for me?” Everyone turned. Dr. Ethan Tang stood at the doorway. Gasps spread through the room. No one expected to see him—not now, not for this. “Dr. Tang, you came at the perfect time,” Su Su said sweetly, her tone turning syrupy. “This girl—she’s insisting you assist her. Can you believe it?” Ethan ignored her. His eyes settled on Eliana, standing tall despite the storm of mockery. His jaw clenched. He hated seeing people like Su Su act superior when they were anything but. “What’s going on?” he asked, sharp and direct. Su Su rushed to explain, tossing her hair like she was on a runway. “The patient’s condition is… unprecedented—nobody has successfully treated this before, not even overseas—” “Then what are we waiting for?” Ethan cut her off, his voice steady. “Let’s do the surgery.” The room froze. Su Su blinked. “You’re… agreeing to help her?” Ethan glanced at her coldly. “If this fails, I’ll take full responsibility. No one else.” “You’re serious?” she stuttered. But he was already turning to Eliana. “Come on. Let’s prep the OR.” As Eliana walked past Su Su, she paused and smiled slightly. “Didn’t you say you’d let me kick your head like a soccer ball if he agreed?” “You—!” Su Su couldn’t believe this was happening. “Oh, and don’t forget to kneel,” Eliana added with a sweet, venom-laced grin. Su Su forced a laugh. “I did say that… but only if you actually save him. Don’t die on the table and blame us later!” Eliana’s expression didn’t change. “You want to call me your ancestor? Sorry, I don’t take brats.” And with that, she followed Ethan to the operating room, leaving the entire staff stunned. Su Su couldn’t let it go. “If she really saves him, she can have my job as deputy director!” She thumped her ID badge dramatically. “Let’s see if she’s got the skills.” Inside the break room, murmurs spread. “Are they really letting her perform surgery?” “Ethan must have lost his mind. That old man’s life is on the line!” “Professor Zhang, we have to stop this!” But Zhang said nothing. His gaze lingered on the closed OR doors. “She’s not just any girl,” whispered one of the senior doctors. “There’s something about her. The way she talks, the way Dr. Tang trusts her…” “She knew about artificial valve infections,” another added. “That’s not beginner knowledge.” But not everyone was convinced. “She’s not even licensed! If this fails, we’re all dead—especially if S’s grandson finds out we let this happen!” Su Su growled, “And that little brat doesn’t even know who she’s trying to save… If she did, she would’ve run already.”
