Chapter 4

830 Words
After seeing Hazel off, Lucas hurried back to the hospital room. Beatriz had injured her head after taking a nasty spill down the stairs, and the doctor ordered her to stay overnight for observation. Lucas refused to hire a caregiver and personally stayed in the ward to look after her. He put aside his work to stay by her side, wiping her down and carrying her to her checkups. He would personally feed her porridge and peel fruit for her. Late at night, when she was in unbearable pain from her wound, he would wake up immediately and gently pat her back to comfort her. And when the nurse changed her dressing, his eyes would turn red from sheer sympathy. He looked exactly like a devoted husband who loved her deeply. When Lucas wasn't in the picture, he was always so good to her. But every time Beatriz looked at his face, she remembered how he had abandoned her countless times, remembered his cruel betrayal, and remembered those two fake marriage certificates. The next morning, after finishing the discharge procedures, Beatriz and Lucas headed out together. Just as the two reached the hospital entrance, they suddenly saw a figure rushing toward them. Lucas instinctively shielded Beatriz behind him, but he froze when he saw the person's face. "Hazel?" Hazel suddenly dropped to her knees in front of Beatriz with a heavy thud. She kowtowed, apologizing frantically. "Beatriz! I was wrong! I really know I was wrong! Please, let me go! Don't let them torment or bully me anymore. I swear I won't cross the line with Lucas again. I'm scared. I won't dare to do it again." Lucas snapped his gaze over to Beatriz. Beatriz shook her head, her face completely blank. "I've been staying in the ward the whole time, so I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about." The moment Hazel heard Beatriz deny it, she was instantly scared out of her wits, raising her hand and slapping herself hard across the face. She struck herself brutally, and after a few blows, her cheek swelled up. She cried even more miserably. "I was really wrong, I was really wrong! Please, please, don't ruin me!" Lucas was rattled by her bizarre behavior and quickly rushed over, pulling her into his arms to stop her from hurting herself. Looking at the bruises and bloodstains on her body, his expression grew incredibly grim. "Hazel, what exactly happened? How did you end up like this? Who bullied you?" Lucas leaned against his chest and burst into a fresh wave of tears. "It's the psych ward staff. They said Beatriz gave them 500,000 dollars to teach me a lesson. Last night, they kept hitting me, slapping me, pinning me to a chair to shock me, and even trying to force me to strip naked for photos." As she spoke, she sobbed uncontrollably, trembling as she reached out her hand to show Lucas. Lucas held her hand, his eyes bloodshot with sorrow. He turned his head to glare at Beatriz, his gaze fierce. "Hazel was just a bit willful. She played a few pranks on you, and now you want to completely destroy her? How did you become so vicious?" Beatriz's face went pale as she hurriedly denied it. "This has nothing to do with me! I don't know anyone from the psych ward, and I've never hired anyone to humiliate Hazel!" Hazel seemed terrified of Beatriz, cowering in fear inside Lucas's arms. "No, it's not you! I was just talking nonsense. Please don't hit me! Please don't hit me!" As she spoke, she raised her hand to slap her own mouth again, looking absolutely terrified. Heartbroken, Lucas held her tightly, glaring fiercely at Beatriz. "You're still going to deny it? Beatriz, you really disappoint me!" Beatriz's face turned ashen. "You don't believe me?" Lucas held Hazel even tighter. "Hazel has always been terrified of pain. Even if her finger gets a little cut, she throws a huge fuss just to be comforted. Do you really think she would deliberately do this to herself just to frame you?" As he spoke, he looked at the bodyguards and coldly gave the order. "Take my wife to the psych ward!" The bodyguards immediately walked over to Beatriz. Beatriz backed away repeatedly. "No! Lucas, you can't treat me like this! Her injuries have nothing to do with me. You can't condemn me just based on a few words from her!" Lucas's eyes were icy cold. "If I say you're guilty, then you're guilty." Two bodyguards restrained her from both sides and dragged her straight to the psychiatric ward where Lucas had spent the night. The staff members who had contacted Lucas the previous night were caught. Lucas stepped heavily on their chests. "Whatever you did to Hazel the night before, I want you to do it all over again to her!" As he spoke, he grabbed Beatriz by the collar and slammed her to the ground.
