Emily almost jumped up but forced herself to keep still, even as her face changed color. “Are you alright?” Lord Jergens asked his daughter softly, his voice low as civilized conversation floated about the room, but the light panic was clear to Emily’s ear. “I…,” she stammered, then swallowed, closing her eyes for a second. She reopened them and turned to her father. “Yes, Father, I’m fine. Too many people, I think,” she continued, lazily placing a lock of non-existent hair behind her ear, given that her hair was fully held up in a bun at the top of her head.
