Chapter 7: Orientation

1112 Words
One Week Later "Beauty! Over here!" Agnes's excited voice cut through the bustling lobby of Venturi Enterprises. Beauty turned toward the sound and felt her first genuine smile in days spread across her face. Her friend stood near the bank of elevators, practically bouncing on her toes with nervous energy. Beauty weaved through the crowd of impeccably dressed professionals, her new heels clicking against the tiled floor. She'd spent her entire weekend shopping for appropriate work clothes, maxing out her credit card on blazers and pencil skirts that screamed corporate respectability. "Can you believe we both made it?" Agnes whispered as they embraced briefly. "I barely slept last night. I kept having nightmares that they'd call and tell me it was all a mistake." "Tell me about it," Beauty muttered, though her own sleepless nights had been filled with very different anxieties. Every time she'd closed her eyes, she'd seen Marcello's cold stare and remembered his final warning about returning what belonged to him. Agnes grabbed her arm excitedly. "Come on, we're supposed to be in the orientation hall on the fifteenth floor. I got here early and took a peek… Beauty, you won't believe how gorgeous it is." They joined the stream of new employees heading toward the elevators. Beauty recognized several faces from the interview day, though notably fewer than had originally applied. Marcello's brutal screening process had clearly weeded out most of the candidates. The elevator ride seemed to take forever, each floor bringing Beauty closer to facing him again. Her palms grew damp inside her leather gloves as she imagined walking into that room and having those dark eyes find her immediately. "Floor fifteen," the automated voice announced. The doors slid open to reveal an opulent hallway lined with abstract paintings and fresh orchid arrangements. Agnes practically gasped beside her. "This place is incredible," she breathed. "I feel like I'm in some fancy hotel." Beauty had to admit the surroundings were impressive. Everything from the crown molding to the crystal light fixtures screamed expensive taste and unlimited budget. This was a different world from the modest business school classrooms where she'd spent the last four years. They followed signs directing new employees to the Alexander Hall, joining a steady stream of nervous-looking people clutching folders and coffee cups. When they reached the massive double doors, Agnes stopped dead in her tracks. "Oh my God," she whispered. Beauty peered over her friend's shoulder and felt her own breath catch. The orientation hall was stunning, soaring ceilings painted with intricate frescoes, towering windows that offered panoramic views of the city, and rows of plush burgundy seats arranged theater-style facing an imposing stage. "I feel like I'm at Disney World," Agnes murmured, still gaping at their surroundings. "This is where we're going to work? Seriously?" Despite her anxiety, Beauty couldn't help but be impressed. The level of luxury was almost overwhelming, fresh flower arrangements the size of small trees, marble columns that probably cost more than her parents' house, and artwork that looked like it belonged in a museum. They found seats in the middle section, Agnes still turning her head to take in every detail of their glamorous surroundings. Around them, other new hires whispered among themselves, equally awed by the grandeur. "Good morning, ladies and gentlemen." The voice boomed across the hall, amplified by hidden speakers. Beauty's blood turned to ice as she recognized the cold, commanding tone immediately. Marcello strode onto the stage flanked by four other people in expensive suits, presumably the board members Agnes had mentioned. Even from a distance, his presence was magnetic and intimidating. He wore a well ironed black suit that fit him like it had been painted on, his dark hair perfectly styled, his jaw set in hard lines. Beauty sank lower in her seat, hoping desperately that the distance and crowd would keep her invisible. But even as she tried to disappear, she felt drawn to watch him. There was something mesmerizing about the way he commanded the room without even trying. "Welcome to Venturi Enterprises," Marcello continued, his voice carrying easily to every corner of the hall. "You are here because you survived our selection process… a process designed to separate the capable from the mediocre." A murmur ran through the assembled group. Agnes shifted uncomfortably beside Beauty. "Make no mistake," Marcello went on, his tone growing colder with each word. "This is not your college career center. This is not a place where participation trophies are handed out for simply showing up. This is a billion-dollar corporation built on excellence, precision, and results." Beauty felt a chill run down her spine. Even his welcome speech sounded like a threat. "Your performance will be monitored constantly. Mistakes will not be tolerated. Excuses will not be accepted." His dark eyes swept across the audience, and Beauty instinctively shrank further into her seat. "Those who cannot meet our standards will be removed swiftly and without ceremony." The hall had grown completely silent except for the nervous shuffling of papers and clearing of throats. Agnes grabbed Beauty's hand and squeezed it tightly. "You will find that we maintain the highest levels of professionalism at all times," Marcello continued, beginning to pace slowly across the stage. "Your personal lives, your relationships, your problems… none of these concerns have any place within these walls." Beauty's heart began to race. Something in his tone had shifted, become more pointed. "We expect complete dedication to your duties," he said, his voice dropping to a more intimate register that somehow made it even more menacing. "Complete loyalty to the company and discretion regarding all business matters." He stopped pacing and stood center stage, his hands clasped behind his back. The board members flanking him looked uncomfortable, as if they weren't quite sure what he was building toward. "Which brings me to my final and most important point," Marcello said, his voice cutting through the silence like a blade. Beauty felt his eyes find her across the crowded hall. Even with dozens of people between them, she knew with absolute certainty that he was looking directly at her. Her breath caught in her throat. "There is no room for personal relationships in this company," he continued, never breaking eye contact with her. "Be it old relationships or new relationships, everything… and I mean everything… about Venturi Enterprises must remain strictly professional." The words hit Beauty like physical blows. Around her, other new employees nodded and murmured their understanding, completely unaware of the real message being delivered. But Beauty understood perfectly. This wasn't a general company policy being explained to new hires. This was a warning meant specifically for her.
